OJSC MegaFon was opened by a new data processing center in Samara which, according to the experts, has the characteristics of reliability and security, best in Russia. The project investment cost made more than 900 million rubles. Design and integration of engineering infrastructure of a complex of 6912 sq.m were performed by CROC company.

OJSC MegaFon — only of three largest mobile operators of Russia which unrolled own network and renders all range of services of mobile communication in all territory of the country. The new data processing center will become a leader of the industry and a crucial element of the DPC future federal network.

On October 8, 2010 in Samara official opening of the Technology data processing center (DPC) of MegaFon company, largest in Russia, took place. The complex of buildings occupies the space in 3.2 hectares. The total area of DPC is 6912 sq.m. with 6 autohalls. The building is located in the flood-free area, in it 100% reservation on power supply are implemented. Bearing capacity of overlappings – up to 5 tons on 1 sq.m.

Construction of DPC continued 2 years. The complex conforms to the international standard on telecommunication infrastructure of data processing centers of EIA/TIA-492. According to MegaFon, the Samara DPC is the commercial data center, largest in the CIS, on the areas, opportunities and investment volume. The complex is located in the territory in 3.2 hectares in Krasnoglinsky district Samara. Infrastructure of a complex includes DPC, transformer substation, the diesel generator set and also the boiler house and a post of protection. In the building of DPC with a total area nearly 7,000 sq.m six big autohalls the electrofeeding installations and command center are located monitorings. Power supply system power – 8 MW. Here 100 percent reservation of all communications is implemented. Fiber lines are brought by different routes that guarantees uninterrupted data transmission and sure network functioning. Capacity of channels of data center – up to 500 Gbps.

Resources of DPC are available to the companies of a different profile performing activity in Russia and other countries of the world. Among the main services: lease of space for placement of technology equipment and connection to channels of the Internet, providing in lease of servers, a hosting.

Specialists of CROC company performed design and installation of 16 engineering systems of DPC, including power supply systems, providing a microclimate, fire safety and protection. Management of all systems happens in the uniform dispatching center which is an intellectual core of engineering infrastructure of a complex.

"We provided 100% reservation of all engineering subsystems so the DPC is ready to work independently 365 days in a year without interruption in work of services — Shirokov Alexander, the director of the department of intellectual buildings of CROC company commented — this DPC already received a preliminary estimate of Uptime Institute [1] about compliance to the TIER III. standard with coefficient of fault tolerance of 99.982%. Now we work on that at the beginning of 2011 the official certificate was received. So in Russia there will be the first DPC which in a year cannot interrupt the work more, than for 1.6 hours. By the way, around the world the DPCs certified on Tier III, only 14. I think, it is possible not to explain that the companies using this standard for arrangement of DPC invested in the future, in unique competitive advantages, flexibility and stability of business".

Certification on the level of reliability of TIER III

According to the operator, the data processing center (DPC) of MegaFon company located in Samara became the first DPC in Russia which received the certificate of reliability of the third level. At assessment of the center many factors are considered: reliability of the building, power supply, the engineering systems and other communications, the installed equipment. Secure high "strength" allows to carry out to DPC maintenance and repair works without stopping of activity. It means that the DPC provides uninterrupted providing telecommunication services to clients even in extreme operating conditions, sure work of own powerful network of the company and infrastructures of the partners who are serviced in the center.

DPC of MegaFon – the nominee of a prestigious architectural award

The data processing center of MegaFon company located in Samara entered a short list of the architectural and construction award Best Building Awards. As a result of expert evaluation of jury of the architectural and construction award "The Best House of Russia" the data processing center (DPC) of the Volga region branch of MegaFon company entered a short list for final vote.

The award Best Building Awards is the first and still only tender in the country by determination of the best building open online vote in which anyone can take part. The award was founded in 2005 under the slogan "Made in future" reflecting the concept of assistance to development of advanced technologies of construction and innovative architectural concepts. To participation in tender projects of apartment houses, public and commercial buildings, the reconstructed objects and also town-planning projects of complex development of territories – both high-rise, and low-rise are approved. At assessment both art advantages of the project, and quality of its implementation are considered.

The competitive program consists of several stages. At the first stage (on May 10-16) from the general list of buildings of Russia the public council by a closed ballot was determined by a long-list from 40 projects. On the second (on May 18-22) experts defined a short list from 12 finalists. On September 19 the third starts, most important, a stage – open national online vote according to the results of which in October the winner in the main nomination – "The house of year will be defined: choice of the people".

The data processing center of MegaFon represents not only the company, but also all Samara region at tender. It is the commercial data center, largest in Russia, on the area, level of technical capabilities, capacities and also investment volume. The complex is located in the territory in 3.2 hectares in Krasnoglinsky district of Samara. Power supply system power – 8 MW, it is enough for electricity supply of the small country, for example, Vatican. All the year round in the building the identical mode of humidity and air temperature (+19 °C) favorable for operation of the hi-tech equipment is supported.

2012: The Moscow DPC of Megafon became small for the company

Work plan

Prior to the beginning of November, 2012 IT resources of shop.megafon.ru online store will be transferred to the Data processing center of DPC of Megafon in Samara.

The company considers that this step considerably will increase reliability of the IT system and also will improve opportunities for further growth.

The first stage on the new platform will install the new equipment on which all services will be in parallel started; further the equipment on which the online store works now will be disconnected and transported in new DPC. Switching between platforms will be carried out at night, and the possible break in work of services will last no more than half an hour.

Equipment

Technically new IT solution is based on the equipment of HP and Cisco, and its software part - on Oracle Solaris 10 as the operating system and on Oracle Enterprise Edition DBMS 11G.

Low powers of the Moscow DPC

According to the source close to the company, power of the Moscow DPC became insufficiently for requirements of the company, and the DPC in Samara is one of the largest in the country.

Analysts Denis Kuskov and Irina Yakimenko are sure that moving is caused by the program for cost reduction in Megafon and the increasing needs of the operator.

"Considering the Moscow DPC of the operator, one may say, that its area is 1364 square meters, and Samara - 6912 square meters", - Yakimenko told. - In addition to the areas it should be taken into account that lease cost in megalopolises from year to year increases, and power does not change therefore large corporations pay attention to other platforms more and more".

According to Denis Kuskov, there is one more factor which influenced the decision on moving: it is more profitable and simpler to lease the platform in Moscow, and to move to the DPC to the region where also the electric power is cheaper and the wage level for employees it is not comparable to Moscow. "All this is entered in the program for reduction in 2012 of expenses on 30%", - he told.

Forecasts of development

"Internet retail in Russia – one of the most actively growing economy segments. Within the closest years of Internet sale will steadily grow. Therefore we prepare IT resources for the increasing loading already now. Unique opportunities of one of the largest Russian DPCs will allow us to increase capacities practically without restrictions", - the director of Internet sales to own retail network "MegaFon" Mikhail Golubev told.

"In 2013 we are going to increase investments into online store. It is the most perspective and popular channel for communication with clients, not only in terms of sales, but also from a position of service. We hope that clients will appreciate as exclusive products which will be available only in online store, and the quality level of services", - the sales director and to service of OJSC MegaFon Igor Maystrenko told.
