Magnetic hyperthermia

Magnetic hyperthermia is a promising method of treating cancer by destroying tumor cells by locally heating them. Magnetic nanoparticles are injected into the tumor tissue and when an external alternating magnetic field is applied, they are heated to 43−45◦C, which leads to the destruction of the tumor tissue, while the surrounding healthy cells are not damaged.

Russian scientists have proposed a technology for obtaining nanoparticles for the treatment of cancer

Scientists at the University of Science and Technology MISIS have proposed a technology for producing nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia - a promising method of treating cancer, with magnetic properties controlled in a wide range. As representatives of the university shared with Zdrav.Expert on August 9, 2023, the presented method will create substances with specially selected properties for the therapy of various forms of tumors.

According to scientists, the properties of the most common agents for magnetic hyperthermia - magnetite or maghemite-based nanoparticles - change in a very narrow range, and it is quite difficult to control them for different types of tumors. MISIS proposed to manufacture nanomaterials with magnetic characteristics based on a complex oxide - strontium hexaferrite, with the addition of indium. The technology will make it possible to create agents with properties selected for the individual conditions of therapy of various forms of cancer tumors.

"Indium doping made it possible to change the magnetic properties of strontium hexaferrite over a wide range and adapt them so that the material experiences heating in the variable fields used in the magnetic hyperthermia method and is heated to temperatures sufficient for therapy. The method we use can scale up to tens of grams of the final product, while the most common methods currently give a product yield only in milligrams, "said study co-author Polina Nikolenko, a graduate of the Master's Degree Institute of New Materials at MISIS University.

In the future, the team of scientists plans to work out the technology and obtain a larger number of samples with different degrees of doping. The end result is expected to be a mock-up of a technology for producing agents for magnetic hyperthermia that can be scaled for real use.

Detailed results of the study are published in the international scientific journal Materials (Q2).

Scientists of NITU MISIS, NRNU MEPhI and IZMI RAS for the first time in the world received the purest nanoparticles for a progressive method of treating cancer - magnetic hyperthermia.
