In mid-September 2023, it became known about the creation of Russia the new Elbrus-B processors. The project worth approximately 30 rubles billion is being implemented by the adviser to the deputy head of Yevgeny Rostec Babayan, the son of the founder (MCST chip developer) Elbrus Boris Babayan.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the Elbrus-B initiative involves the development of a high-performance processor, the production of which "is potentially possible at Russian plants that do not have advanced technologies." We are talking about norms of 60 nanometers or more. The chip is expected to be able to solve a large number of unrelated computing problems at the same time - several times more than products on a traditional architecture.

According to available information, the team of Yevgeny Babayan is consulting with Rostec regarding the prospects for the project. The initiative is planned to be implemented within three years. It is emphasized that the ICST has nothing to do with the idea of ​ ​ creating Elbrus-B chips, according to the publication of the publication of September 14, 2023.

On the one hand, the new project has good prospects - in the light of the current geopolitical situation and import substitution in the IT sphere. However, on the other hand, Russian market participants say, in practice, it will be problematic to organize the development and subsequent production of Elbrus-B chips. The fact is that it is necessary to attract a large number of highly qualified specialists to create processors, but such personnel in Russia are in short supply.

The reality is that now there are only three architectures in the world - Arm, x86 and RISC-V, hundreds of billions of dollars have been invested in them, and trillions in software. Devices running on these architectures are part of a global digital infrastructure.
