2022: 4.5% drop in children to 7.01 million
In 2022, the number of students of educational institutions in Russia amounted to 7.01 million people, which is 4.5% less than a year earlier. Such data in October 2023 led to the analytical agency BusinesStat.
According to the study, from 2018 to 2022. the number of kindergarten pupils in the Russian Federation decreased by 7.5% largely due to a drop in the birth rate in the country. In 2014, the number of people born in Russia amounted to 1.9 million people, in 2022 - 1.3 million people. The annual decline in the birth rate led to a decrease in the total number of preschool children and, accordingly, the number of kindergarten pupils. A greater reduction in the market was restrained by the opening of new groups and the creation of additional places for children waiting for admission to kindergarten in regions with low availability of preschool education, experts say.
According to them, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and sanctions restrictions did not have a significant impact on the market. The basic preschool education sector in Russia is poorly commercialized. The majority of students receiving pre-school education attend budget pre-school organizations (98.4% of the total in 2022). To maintain the achieved level of availability of preschool education in 2020 and 2022. The state did not require a significant increase in funding for the industry due to a decrease in demand, according to BusinesStat.
According to Rosstat estimates, in 2018-2022. the number of teachers of preschool education in Russia ranged from 665.9 to 682.9 thousand people. The decrease in the number of teachers in 2021-2022. was due to a decrease in the total number of preschool educational institutions and a decrease in the number of pupils of preschool educational institutions.[1]
