2023: Product Announcement

Ozon developed and implemented a device for automatic measurement of dimensions and weight of goods in its warehouses. This was announced by the press service of the company on November 22, 2023.

The complex was created by Ozon Tech specialists. It is equipped with a pair of cameras with a 3D sensor, which can make up a 3D model of the product, as well as one webcam, strain gauges for measuring weight and various types of lighting for the correct operation of the machine learning algorithm. According to the developers, measurements of dimensions are carried out through algorithms that combine depth data from cameras and calculate the exact dimensions.

After measurements, the device transmits data to the warehouse management system, it determines where it is better to supply the goods. The operator sees the information on the manual scanner. Thanks to this scheme, the product will lie next to similar positions and will not be damaged by heavier things, and the cost of storage and delivery will become "more transparent," Ozon said.

The company was prompted to create such a device by the fact that earlier weighing of goods and determining dimensions was carried out by sellers, and later reconciliation was carried out at the sorting center. In this work, errors occurred on the part of sellers, and sorters carried out operations manually and corrected the problem that arose. Now the work of sorters will be performed by a special device that automatically reads the weight.

By November 22, 2023, a device for automatic measurement of dimensions and weight of goods was installed on 16 Ozon completements. The retailer plans to install the system on all of its warehouses. The company noted that its own device is several times cheaper than its foreign counterparts, in addition, it wins over them in terms of scanning speed and accuracy, and also easily integrates with its own warehouse management system, Ozon added.[1]
