Ozon is opening a robotic lab. Developing your own solutions will come out cheaper

Ozon is opening its own robotic laboratory in Innopolis, the company said on July 20, 2021. As TAdviser was specified in Ozon, the new division is part of its IT laboratory - Ozon Tech.

Salimzhan Gafurov, who previously headed the laboratory of autonomous vehicles of the Center for Robotics and Mechatronics Component Technologies at Innopolis University, was appointed head of the laboratory.

Under the leadership of Gafurov, a team of 40 engineers will work to create solutions for the robotization of fulfillment centers and sorting hubs, robotic systems for efficient storage, processing and delivery of orders. These solutions can increase the productivity of warehouses and reduce the physical load on staff, say Ozon. Also, the decisions will affect other stages of the logistics supply chain, including the "last mile." And as it evolves, the robotics lab team will expand.

E-commerce is impossible without logistics infrastructure and technological solutions for its effective operation. Today we have over 250 thousand square meters. m fulfillment areas, more than 50 sorting centers throughout the country, and the number of branded points of issue of orders exceeded 12 thousand. In the medium term, Ozon's fulfillment areas will grow to 1 million square meters. m, and the capacity of sorting hubs and the last mile will increase significantly. Own developments in the field of logistics robotization will make the supply chain much more efficient in the future and set standards for the entire e-commerce market. Now there are almost 40 robotics engineers in our laboratory, "says Anton Stepanenko, Ozon's technical director.

Anton Stepanenko explained to TAdviser why Ozon prefers to develop its own developments in this area instead of using finished products that are offered on the market. Russian e-commerce has a lot of local specifics, he says. Domestically, the approach to organizing logistics and, for example, planning and equipping fulfillment objects is very different even among market players similar in business models.

In such conditions, the purchase of ready-made solutions would require processing and adaptation to our processes, which, as practice shows, is a resource-intensive process in terms of money and time. In such conditions, developing your own solutions will definitely be cheaper than implementing existing ones. We want not only to introduce existing solutions, but to increase our own expertise. With robotization, we decided to follow the same path that we have always followed in IT - to develop our own. So, we have our own WMS system, our own application for couriers and a number of other solutions, "Ozon CTO told TAdviser.

Ozon does not plan to offer products developed in the laboratory yet, the company told TAdviser.

Of course, our first priority is to develop solutions to improve the efficiency of our own logistics. It is too early to talk about solutions for the external market, "Anton Stepanenko told TAdviser.
