Kaspersky SD-WAN 2.2 with support for centralized configuration of Direct Internet Access

The functionality of Kaspersky SD-WAN 2.2 has significantly expanded compared to the previous version, 2.1. The release of the update was another step towards the implementation of the concept of network security of organizations - SASE (Secure Access Service Edge). The solution is suitable for enterprises that are in the process of digital transformation, already have an extensive branch network or are only aimed at expansion, plan to move part of the resources to one or more. clouds The developer announced this on April 17, 2024.

A study by Kaspersky Lab and TelecomDaily was attended by representatives of companies that have already implemented SD-WAN technology from various vendors. When asked what functions are missing, respondents most often answered as follows: there is not enough automation of solution management (44%) and insufficient flexibility in configuring network policies (40%). They would also like to receive better support for multiple types of network connections (38%) for more comfortable use of solutions of this class. The release of a more mature version, Kaspersky SD-WAN 2.2, is a logical continuation of the product's development, and the new features are designed to facilitate its implementation and use for a wider range of users.

In Kaspersky SD-WAN 2.2, the solution received the following set of additional functions:

  • Centralized CPE protection - Allows you to manage firewall and NAT rules on all SD-WAN routers from a single console using templates.
  • Support has been implemented for the centralized configuration of Direct Internet Access (DIA), that is, redirecting traffic to an external network.
  • Support for the PPPoE protocol is implemented: this allows you to connect CPE devices to those WAN channels that use such a protocol, and, as a result, increase the number of WAN channel types that can be used for Kaspersky SD-WAN. This functionality is especially relevant for telecom operators.
  • The ability to centrally configure and send NetFlow telemetry with CPE to increase transparency of factory SD-WAN activity - a combined network of routers. This makes it possible, among other things, to integrate Kaspersky Unified Monitoring and Analysis Platform with the SIEM system and Kaspersky CyberTrace platform to detect threats and anomalies in traffic.
  • Integration capabilities with other Kaspersky Lab products have been improved: Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity for Networks industrial environment protection solution, Kaspersky Unified Monitoring and Analysis Platform SIEM system, platform for protection against complex threats and targeted attacks Kaspersky Anti Targeted Attack.
  • Support for Red OS for deploying the central components of the solution has been implemented.
  • The process of deploying the solution has been simplified: an automated installer has appeared, a set of pre-configured network templates has been created for routers of the Kaspersky SD-WAN Edge Service Router lineup. This will make it easier for specialists to deploy and support routers in remote offices.

Kaspersky SD-WAN is a key element of the network security product set (SASE), its transport infrastructure part. It is this solution that provides a service chain between all products and strengthens corporate information security. This is an important requirement on the part of organizations, as evidenced by the data of our study: almost every second company with a branch network in Russia implements SD-WAN precisely to improve the level of security. We continue to improve the technological and functional capabilities of Kaspersky SD-WAN in order to reveal all the advantages of this technology in the customer's infrastructure, "said Maxim Kaminsky, Head of Network Security at Kaspersky Lab.

2023: Product Announcement

In mid-December 2023, Kaspersky Lab announced the inclusion of its Kaspersky SD-WAN system in the register of Russian telecommunications equipment. This is said to be the first such decision in the register.

The fact that the software and hardware complexes (PAC) supplied as part of the Kaspersky SD-WAN ESR (K) solution received the status of telecommunications equipment of Russian origin is reported on the manufacturer's website. According to Maxim SD-WAN Kaminsky, Business Development Manager/SASE of Kaspersky Lab, this status suggests that the product meets all national standards and is safe as a technology - this applies to both the ON equipment itself. This confirms the high level of maturity of the created PAC, he said.

Kaspersky SD-WAN

As emphasized in Kaspersky Lab, the inclusion of Kaspersky SD-WAN in the register of Russian telecommunications equipment is of great importance for the industry as a whole and business, in particular, which the import substitution program implements. The confirmed status of equipment of Russian origin is especially important for all entities belonging to system-forming enterprises, the company said.

They recalled that in mid-November 2023, a decree of the Government of Russia was issued on the procedure for transferring such organizations to trusted software and hardware complexes, from which it follows that they should switch to use in the infrastructure of domestic software and hardware complexes.

Kaspersky Lab adds that the inclusion of PAC in the corresponding register of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia gives a number of advantages to organizations:

  • the opportunity to promptly obtain the conclusion of the State Commission on Radio Frequencies;
  • free examination of applications of telecom operators;
  • manufacturers of Russian equipment will be able to export it to the CIS and other friendly countries with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.[1]
