2023
Growth of TV channel revenues by 25% to 369.7 billion rubles
At the end of 2023, the turnover of television channels in Russia, excluding advertising revenues, reached 369.7 billion rubles. This is 25% more compared to the previous year, when the result of 295.6 billion rubles was recorded. Data on market dynamics on March 19, 2024 was released by BusinesStat.
According to estimates, in 2019, the revenues of TV channels in the Russian Federation amounted to 278.5 billion rubles. In 2020, there was an increase of 5.5% - to 293.8 billion rubles. In the context of self-isolation provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic, people began to spend more time in front of TV screens. This entailed an increase in demand for TV content. In addition, interest in television broadcasts of sporting events and other events increased, many of which were held without spectators in the stands.
In 2021, the turnover of TV channels in the Russian Federation showed an increase of 0.4% - to 295.1 billion rubles, while in 2022 the increase was 0.2%, and the final result was about 296 billion rubles. Due to the formed geopolitical situation, the broadcasting network of many TV channels was seriously changed: the number of entertainment programs decreased in favor of news and political, while Russian athletes did not take part in a number of sports competitions. As a result, viewers who are not interested in political issues have shifted their focus to the consumption of content on the Internet.
In 2023, TV channels in Russia showed a sharp increase in income. The fact is that popular TV shows, TV shows, shows and sporting events began to return to the air. In addition, there was an increase in the number of pay-TV subscribers, which is explained by the expansion of the range of services with an affordable cost of services. Paid cable and satellite operators offer a wide variety of channels in HD and 4K quality, as well as access to a variety of films, series, sports broadcasts, documentary programs and other types of content, which attracts viewers.[1]

"Russia 1" leads the TV audience in Russia for the eighth year in a row
"Russia 1" leads the TV audience in Russia for the eighth year in a row. This is evidenced by Mediascope data for 2023.
The study includes two main indicators: rating (the average number of people who watched the TV channel, expressed as a percentage of the population) and proportion (the average number of people who watched the TV channel, expressed as a percentage of the entire television audience).
As Kommersant writes with reference to this report, the rating of Russia 1 in 2023 decreased from 2.1% to 2%, but the channel's share, on the contrary, increased by 0.1 percentage point (pp), to 15.5%.
In second place is the NTV channel (part of Gazprom-Media): its rating fell to 1.1%, and the share increased to 8.8%. Closes the top three Channel One with a rating of 1% and a share of 8.1%.
The fourth and fifth places were retained by Channel Five with a rating of 0.8% and REN TV with a rating of 0.7%. At the same time, both increased the share of the audience: Channel Five increased it by 0.3 pp, to 6.3%, and REN TV - by 0.5 pp, to 5.3%. TV Center (0.5%; 4.4%) took sixth place, displacing STS, which dropped to seventh line with a rating of 0.5% and a share of 4.1%. Domashny dropped to eighth position: the channel's share was 4%, and the rating was 0.5%. TNT (0.5%; 3.7%) and Russia 24 (0.3%; 2.6%) also switched places in the ranking.
Kirill Tanaev, director of the Institute of Modern Media, notes that Russia 1 and NTV "have finally found a balance between socio-political, information, entertainment programs that have allowed increasing the share of the audience." The expert associates the situation on Channel One with "the loss of key programs that kept the audience, for example, daytime shows."
At the same time, Tanaev drew attention to the fact that the Mediascope rating takes into account the 4 + audience, which is mainly concentrated around 60 + women. It is she who creates the bulk of television viewing in the country, but in other categories preferences will be different,[3] added[4]
