2024: Creating a Human Face Phantom

Metropolitan scientists have created a phantom of a person's face on which you can work out injection methods. This is the first domestic model for training ultrasound-controlled manipulations. This was announced by the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine (NPCC DiT DZM) on January 16, 2024.

Aesthetic medicine under ultrasound control is a global trend that increases the safety of the procedure for the patient. With the help of injection techniques, for example, botulinum therapy - blocking the transmission of impulses from nerve endings to muscles, many cosmetic and medical problems are solved, such as muscle spasm, excessive salivation in children with cerebral palsy, chewing muscle hypertension, and so on. Thanks to the face phantom created by Moscow scientists, the specialist has the opportunity to work out the skills of these manipulations on the simulator, accompanying them with the visualization of anatomical structures. It looks like this: the doctor sees where the needle penetrates, and only then gives an injection, - said Yuri Vasiliev, chief radiologist of Moscow, director of the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine of the Moscow Department of Health.

The simulator was developed by scientists of the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine DZM. It has a skull, salivary gland, structures with vessels and skin, which in different areas has different density and thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer. The simulator can be used many times to work out injection skills in the nasolabial folds, lips, forehead, as well as in the temporal area.

The phantom is a realistic-sized head model with silicone skin and anatomical features. The simulator is designed to improve the effectiveness of training in passing certification and accreditation, and will also be useful for dermatologists and ultrasound diagnostics specialists to expand the range of studies. The image of the phantom structures on the screen of the ultrasound apparatus is identical to the image of the subcutaneous layers of the human face. The developers have provided for the presence of imitation of the main arterial trunks in dangerous areas of the face, which allows marking to be applied in order to reduce the likelihood of intravascular injections, "said Vsevolod Lykhin, doctor of ultrasound diagnostics at the S.P. Botkin City Clinical Hospital.

Earlier, scientists at the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine developed models of the breast and thyroid gland, a liver phantom, a phantom that simulates human vessels and nerves. In total, eight such models have been created in the center's laboratory. They assist physicians in clinical practice in performing ultrasound, densitometry, monitoring the quantitative parameters of computer and magnetic resonance imaging, mammography and taking thyroid biopsies under ultrasound control.
