2024: Internet launch in Zhigansky district of Yakutia
High-speed Internet has appeared in another Arctic region of Yakutia. This was announced by the Press Center of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Moscow on February 9, 2024.
The Zhigansky district of Yakutia, located beyond the Arctic Circle, became the first territory for the implementation of the large-scale project "Synergy of the Arctic."
VOLS with a length of 370 km was laid along the winter road from the village of Kirovo, Vilyuysky district, up to three settlements of the district, the fourth will be connected until the end of 2024. Thus, the entire population of the Arctic region will be provided with high-speed Internet.
The command for the launch of a fiber-optic communication line in the Zhigansky district was given by the head of Yakutia Aysen Nikolaev.
The head of the region noted that the republic is moving towards the main goal - to provide high-speed Internet to all Arctic regions of Yakutia. The next municipality where the VOLS will be laid will be the Olekminsky district.
In 2020, high-speed Internet first came to the Yakut Arctic (Oleneksky district). Earlier in the year, all Arctic territories of Yakutia were provided exclusively by satellite Internet. In 2023, the VOLS was laid to the northernmost point of the Russian Arctic - the village of Yuryung-Khaya, Anabarsky district, and the district itself became the first Arctic region of Yakutia, fully covered by fiber-optic communication.
In 2022, Yakutia signed an agreement with the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation on the joint implementation of the Arctic Synergy project. Until 2025, 86 Arctic and hard-to-reach settlements of Yakutia will be connected to high-speed Internet, and a VOLS with a length of 7 thousand km will be laid. The implementation of the project will reduce the cost of Internet connection for some settlements by 100 times.
In total, over the past 5 years, the network of fiber-optic communication lines (FOCL) in Yakutia has grown 2 times. Taking into account the project "Synergy of the Arctic" by 2025, fiber-optic lines with a length of half of the equator will be laid in the republic.
