2024: Product Announcement
On February 16, 2024, Merit Medical Systems announced a new generation surgical guidance system called Scout MD. It is claimed that this solution allows operations to remove malignancies in the mammary glands and other soft tissues with an accuracy of 1 mm.
It is noted that breast cancer is the most common type of malignant tumors around the world: it accounts for about 12.5% of new cases of cancer detection annually. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020, malignant breast tumors were diagnosed in 2.3 million women and caused approximately 685 thousand deaths on a global scale. Breast cancer occurs in all countries of the world in women of any age after reaching puberty, with incidence rates increasing with age.
Merit Medical Systems emphasizes that 20% to 30% of women who have undergone lumpectomy (sectoral breast resection due to cancer) are forced to undergo repeated surgery. The Scout MD system is designed to improve the accuracy of neoplasm localization, which will increase the effectiveness of surgical interventions and improve the quality of life of patients.
The MD SCOUT complex supports the use of up to four different reflector configurations. In operations on the breast or other soft tissues, these reflectors help surgeons pinpoint the location of the tumor in several dimensions. As a result, it is possible to excise the malignant formations with minimal effect on healthy tissues. This provides an opportunity to increase the chances of success of the operation and minimize the likelihood of repeated surgery.[1]
