Dutch police have begun using BostonDynamics robops in raids on drug labs. Video

Customers: Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Affairs of the Netherlands

Contractors: Boston Dynamics
Product: Boston Dynamics Spot (formerly SpotMini)

Project date: 2024/06

In mid-June 2024, Dutch police began using autonomous robot dogs developed by Boston Dynamics in test mode to more efficiently and safely screen drug laboratories during raids. Dutch police are already using Spot robops to raid and spy on drug trafficking, but in such cases, the curator controls the work of robops remotely. Now robots are planned to be sent to raids offline for the first time.

Spot robopses are not yet able to replace real dogs used by the police, since they do not have a sense of smell. robots However, they can reduce the risk for police officers who, during a raid, can face an attack by criminals, exposure to dangerous chemicals or even an explosion of a drug production laboratory.

Usually we launch specialists in such laboratories in personal protective equipment, but this significantly slows down the work, since they cannot move quickly in protective suits and are forced to work for 20 minutes, - said the representative of the Dutch police Simon Prince.

Robops first joined the Dutch police force in 2021 and the Spot model has undergone many changes since then so they are now able to navigate different landscapes and withstand extreme temperatures. This expands the use of robops, although their implementation in police work is not always smooth: for example, the New York Police Department has abandoned the use of the Spot robot man after a wave of public outrage caused by "creepy" viral videos.[1]
