2024: RuBackup Implementation

VTB Bank is introducing a Russian backup system (RBL), which should later replace foreign solutions used in the bank. The bank announced this on July 15, 2024.

A data backup and recovery system is one of the key elements, IT infrastructures it is necessary to ensure the safety information and continuity of IT systems. By the third quarter of 2024, the share of Russian software IBS in the bank is expected to be at least 80%.

As part of a comprehensive transition to Russian IT systems and ensuring technological independence, VTB Bank is migrating to the RuBackup backup system from one of the domestic software manufacturers, Astra Group. This project was a continuation of the implementation of the plan for phased import substitution of the organization's IT infrastructure: as of July 2024, a significant part of its server architecture operates under OCAstra Linux.

When choosing a solution, VTB was faced with the task of determining the Russian backup system, which would most closely meet the bank's functional tasks, including information security requirements. We conducted a large-scale study of the IBS on the market, analyzing a number of solutions, and also performed comprehensive testing of RuBackup - all of which continued throughout the year. Until recently, VTB used two foreign RBMs - Veeam Backup System and NetBackup. The first has already been decommissioned by the bank. In the future, we intend to gradually decommission NetBackup as RuBackup is deployed, "said Sergey Bezbogov, Deputy Head of the Technology Unit - Senior Vice President of VTB.

The RuBackup solution provides the function of data backup and recovery for all the main elements IT- bank infrastructure: virtual machines physical, servers business applications, management systems (), databases DBMS etc. Among the defining advantages was support for the cluster configuration PostgreSQL of Patroni, integration with the mail servers possibility of flexible integration with OpenStack, taking into account the architectural features of the bank's network landscape and information security requirements.

At the first stage, RuBackup was transferred to the Russian backup system servers under the Astra OS, Linux at the second stage, virtual machines based on the ones VMware that previously used the Veeam Backup System were transferred. After that, the mail servers were transferred. The main DBMS for translation to the Russian RBM is PostgreSQL based on Patroni, in addition, the translation of other target and experimental solutions:,,, and ArenadataDB MongoDB Tarantool ScyllaDB FondationDB are planned.

During the testing and implementation of new releases of RuBackup software, the solution development team made timely changes to the work of the boiler, adapting the solution to the tasks of VTB. In particular, RuBackup clients for PostgreSQL, VMware were significantly improved. The implemented functionality of the RuBackup client for VMware will be used to restore archived data of decommissioned information systems implemented on the basis of VMware.

As a result, as VTB and Astra Group specialists work together, RuBackup has changed qualitatively: its functionality has been significantly expanded. The result was a product implementation on more than 5,000 backup clients with up to 1.5 Petabytes of daily backup data.

The threat of data loss is very urgent: many foreign vendors have limited support and access to updates to Russian users, while the range of malware is growing, and without operational fixes there are serious risks to business. They can be associated with the discovery of new vulnerabilities and attack vectors that can harm all elements of the IT infrastructure. In such circumstances, the role of backup and recovery systems is of particular importance. Even in the event of a successful cyber attack or disaster, a properly configured Recovery Boiler allows you to quickly return the IT system to operation and recover information. The best way out in this situation is to use Russian technologies, "said Ilya Sivtsev, General Director of Astra Group.
