2024: Migration to the cloud service from the Russian vendor

Rosbank Insurance and RNT Group, a Russian technology company with unique global experience (part of the Reksoft group), have completed a project to migrate the insurance system from the customer's infrastructure to the cloud service from a Russian vendor. The project allowed the insurance company to reduce infrastructure costs and royalties by 2 times, as well as ensured more efficient operation and high speed of data exchange. Reksoft announced this on July 16, 2024.

The company's insurance system consists of an insurance contract maintenance module, an operating database, an enterprise data warehouse, and an analytics and reporting module. A multi-component IT solution requires significant effort to control its health, performance, and fault tolerance. In order to reduce operating costs, software ownership costs, as well as to implement Rosbank Insurance's import substitution strategy, it was decided to transfer all modules of the insurance system from the company's own infrastructure and servers to a separate secure cloud environment based on the Russian cloud.

RNT Group and Rosbank Insurance jointly worked out a strategy for transferring and migrating data. They were selected as the target environment virtual machines on the, operating system Linux Red OS included in. register of domestic software The main difficulty of migration was the difference between the OS - the operating systems of the source and target environments. Initially, in the infrastructure of Rosbank Insurance, the solution worked under the control of the OS. Windows Files data in Linux and Windows are in a different format and are directly incompatible. To ensure a smooth change in the stack, the safety and confidentiality of data during the transfer, RNT Group and Rosbank Insurance specialists worked out in advance a mechanism for schematic unloading and loading of data while maintaining their integrity and dependencies, drew up a plan for testing the completeness of loading and error control, as well as a disaster recovery plan - Disaster Recovery Plan.

When migrating, it was also important to achieve minimal system downtime so that the change process did not affect business continuity. The total amount of migrated data was 12 TB, the migration project was prepared and tested in advance. To speed up the process, tools for automating periodic operations, an approach to monitoring health and backing up systems have been previously developed. The Data Base was divided into segments - client data, contracts and others, since a significant amount did not allow data to be transferred as a single stream. At the time of migration, the team downloaded them in parallel, then combined and repeatedly tested them to avoid data loss. As a result, we managed to complete the project with minimal risks within the planned time frame and ensure almost complete continuous operation of the system. The entire project lasted about 5 months, with the bulk of the time taken to prepare for migration, including strategy selection, piloting and hypothesis testing.
