2024: Development of neutron radiation spectrometry and dosimetry stand

Employees of the Department of Applied Nuclear Physics of the Institute of Physical and Technical Intelligent Systems of NRNU MEPhI have developed a stand for spectrometry and dosimetry of neutron radiation, which can be used both to ensure radiation safety in the nuclear industry and for scientific purposes. The university announced this on July 30, 2024.

source = NRNU MEPhI

The main feature of the stand is that it includes three neutron radiation detectors based on different physical principles: a diamond sensor-based detector, a multilayer zinc sulfide and lithium fluoride scintillator-based dosimeter spectrometer (ZnS (Ag) + 6LiF), and an organic scintillator-based spectrometer. Thanks to this, the development is able to measure the characteristics of the neutron field in a wide range of energies from 0.025 eV to 15 MeV and a dose rate range from 10 μSv/h to 10 kSv/h. Thus, the experimental stand allows a comprehensive analysis of the neutron field of all existing "terrestrial" sources of thermal and fast neutrons. Signals from all three detectors are processed by a computer.

This stand can be used for dosimetry and spectrometry of neutron radiation during operation of medical, nuclear-energy, thermonuclear and accelerating installations, for ensuring nuclear safety and nuclear non-proliferation, for radiation metrology and registration of fast-flowing processes in scientific experiments.
