2024: Announcement of the development of the storage robot

On August 6, 2024, representatives of MIPT announced the development of a storage robot. The solution proposed by the employees of the laboratory of digital special-purpose systems MIPT will replace the driver of loading and unloading equipment - a pallet transporter. In addition to the robot itself, Fiztech employees have also created software for a robotic warehouse, with which you can automate logistics processes.

As reported, during the communication of the development group the Russian retailers with, the need of domestic business in unmanned pallet transporters in warehouses was revealed. The introduction of automation tools will minimize the risks of downtime due to the fault of employees, reduce the costs of owners on the wage fund. First of all, there is a need for storage robots in single-level temporary storage areas.

To test the Skladsky robot and software on the basis of MIPT, a test site (mock-up site) was organized on a scale of 1:10, imitating a warehouse with an area of ​ ​ 600 m2 with a ceiling height of about 12 meters. Verification of the possibility of controlling the robot-storekeeper itself is also performed on its reduced copy.

Experimental landfill site

According to Dmitry Gavrilov, director of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the development group conducted experiments to check the quality of the loader within the boundaries of the experimental layout using orientation by optical marks, which showed that the developed prototype provides accurate orientation. Using this method in a warehouse enterprise allows you to create a scalable system for automatic movement of pallets in a warehouse with minimal attachments.

It is assumed that the developed solution will replace the driver of loading and unloading equipment - a pallet transporter at the first stage, and in the future a high-altitude loader or even an operator of production processes. Taking into account the required parameters, the method of navigating ceiling optical labels in the visible range is determined as the most optimal solution. Using this method in a warehouse enterprise allows you to create a scalable system for automatic transfer of pallets in a warehouse with minimal attachments. At the same time, target customers belong to the following segments: large federal and regional 3PL operators, federal retailers and regional distribution centers, full-cycle system integrators.

In addition to the robots themselves, in an automated warehouse, software of its own design is equipped with electric trolleys, with the help of which an autonomous mobile loader is controlled. Its full-size sample for August 2024 is being tested at the site of a real warehouse of one of the major federal retailers. At the same time, it is incorrect to say that in the near future the retail market will face a wave of mass layoffs of employees. Anatoly Uskov, General Director of Unmanned Loader LLC, notes that the technology of an automated warehouse will only close the existing personnel shortage.

We will not leave anyone without work, because there are not enough people who work in these positions for August 2024 - employees do not go to warehouses. That is why the business has a need for automation. It is possible to close the personnel shortage either at the expense of very high salaries, or by attracting migrants. I also note that the existing qualified warehouse workers will not be reduced, but transferred to positions higher - they will be engaged in the management of robots. Employees will simply be trained to stay in the logistics segment - a human resource is extremely important.

The automated warehouse can be equipped with various robotic systems and mechanisms: car kits, paletizers, unmanned inventory systems, cleaning robots and directly autonomous mobile loaders. A full-size sample of the most popular of them - a transporter robot - for August 2024 is being tested at the site of a real warehouse of one of the major federal retailers.
