2024: Introduction of a utility for automating the transfer of server infrastructures to MSVSFERU

On September 6, 2024, the Russian developer Inferit OS (part of the Inferit ecosystem, Softline Group of Companies) presented a utility for automating the transfer of server infrastructures to the MSVSfer operating system.

The Migrator utility is designed to simplify, speed up and automate the transition to the next version of the operating system. It will help users both when migrating to MSVSFERA from foreign Enterprise Linux operating systems, and when upgrading within the product itself.

The problem of switching from foreign software to domestic analogues is extremely relevant. In conditions when support on the territory of the Russian Federation for such products as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Linux, CentOS and their derivatives has already been discontinued or is being completed in the near future, business needs reliable and proven Russian alternatives with the possibility of automated migration.

In June 2024, the life cycle of RHEL 7 (and its derivatives) ended, respectively, product support and security updates ceased. This version of the operating system was used by companies in the Russian Federation, and now they are faced with the need to transition as soon as possible. This is especially true for large enterprises with a large number of servers, where manual migration in a couple of months sounds like a "mission impossible." The Migrator solves this problem for those who want to facilitate the transition process and build a safe and technologically independent infrastructure based on the MSVSFERA OS.

MSVSphera OS is a full-fledged alternative to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Enterprise Linux, CentOS, AlmaLinux OS, Rocky Linux. "Inferit OS" supports the product as part of a ten-year lifecycle, including the release of updates and security patches. The team provides technical support in Russia and product development for the tasks of Russian users.

"Migrator" has combined both the best developments of the open source community in the field of migration of Linux systems, and the expertise of the "Inferit OS" team. The developers offer a powerful framework that can take on a large proportion of routine tasks when updating programs and settings.

The "Migrator" includes the migration utility itself and a script with instructions. The utility is universal for everyone, and the script may require modifications depending on the batch base of the server.

Migrating corporate infrastructure to a new OS is always a complex and painful process with many pitfalls. In itself, overcoming the problems of compatibility, conflicts of dependencies and lost knowledge requires a lot of time and effort, and after all, the costs of the update itself are also superimposed on top. And the way in which the upgrade will take place is a business-critical solution, on which the cost of upgrading largely depends - from a fabulously expensive (at scale) completely manual transition to a more moderate automated one. As an automation tool, we offer the "Migrator," which already contains the main points of OS migration - after which you need to lay only the logic of specific features for the company's infrastructure. In addition to saving time, this approach gives the maximum repeatability of the result, reducing the risk of human errors, "said Alexander Shvetsov, head of the Inferit OS project.
