2023: Softline Computer OS Development

On May 18, 2023, it became known that Softline Group of Companies, a provider of solutions and services in the field of digital transformation and information security, is working on its own operating system. It is planned to use it on desktops and laptops.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the created software platform will be based on technologies purchased in 2021 from the National Support and Development Center (NCPR). The latter develops the MSVSFERA product family (Armed Forces Mobile System) with open source on the Linux kernel.

Softline develops its own OS for computers

The project to create its own, OS according to market participants, may be explained by Softline's desire to increase the volume of product supplies in the interests of state customers. Until 2022, Softline was one of the largest distributors Microsoft in Russia, but in the current geopolitical situation it was forced to revise the business model. In particular, the company reoriented itself to domestic technologies.

Kommersant, referring to information received from persons familiar with the project, notes that Softline will be able to install its OS on computers for state customers and commercial structures. However, MSVSFERA is far from a new product, and therefore it may take several years to refine it for the needs of the Russian market. At the same time, more than sixty operating systems with developed functions are listed in the Register of Russian software. In the public sector, for example, RED OS and Astra Linux platforms are in demand, which are certified by the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control (FSTEC). Therefore, "even if Softline has its own hardware, it will take a lot of effort to achieve a significant role in the Russian market," experts say.[1]

2017: Basic Facts

As of October 2017, MSVSPHERA is a project of the National Center for Support and Development (NCPR), within the framework of which a family of integrated software products is created on the basis of open technologies, focused on the use of Russian government and commercial organizations in most typical informatization tasks, as well as in solving the problems of import substitution of software in legacy and newly created automated systems.

Software products of the MSVF family are delivered under an indefinite non-exclusive license and are provided with technical support, including the release of updates.

For software products of the MSVF family that have built-in information protection tools, certification according to the information security requirements of the FSTEC of Russia is organized and after its completion their delivery can be carried out as in the usual case with the provision of technical support, as well as in the certified version with provision of certification support, including release of inspected updates and provision of possibility of their installation with preservation of validity of certificates of compliance with information security requirements.

Certified MSVF software products can be used in automated systems that process confidential information, in government information systems, in personal data information systems, in automated production and process control systems, as well as in public information systems.
