2024: Adoption of the first Post Panamax-class vessel
In early October 2024, the Lugaport universal terminal in the Leningrad Region, which cost ₽90 billion to build, received the first Post Panamax-class vessel with a draft of 14.5 m.
According to the data, on Sheets the night of October 1, 2024, 109,367 tons of coal from Kuzbass and Khakassia intended for delivery to the ship were loaded onto the Grand T of the Post Panamax class. Turkey The President of the Group of Companies New trance Konstantin Goncharov noted that this event was an important milestone in the implementation of the project to create a deep-sea terminal.
The construction of Lugaport began in 2019 and provides for the creation of six berths with a total capacity of 24.3 million tons per year. The terminal is designed for transshipment of bulk, general, grain and food cargoes. A key feature of the project was the deepening of the bottom of the Baltic Sea to 17.5 m, which allows receiving vessels of the Panamax, New Panamax and Baby Capesize classes with a draft of up to 15.5 m.
Experts note that the ability to accept larger vessels will help reduce logistics costs when delivering goods to Turkey, India and China - the main consumers of Russian coal. Alexey Gagarinov, CEO of Si-Shipping, stressed that after the imposition of sanctions, Russian ports in the North-West faced difficulties in attracting ships, but now there are qualitative changes in this area.
RANEPA St. Petersburg Alexander Dmitriev, head of the security department, noted that the port where Ust-Luga the Lugaport terminal is located successfully copes with the current volume of cargo transshipment. However, he pointed out the possible risks associated with the competitiveness of coal from Kuzbass compared to other regions due to the increase in delivery distance.[1]
