Market map "Digitalization of retail 2024"
Analytical center TAdviser has released a new map "Digitalization of Retail." It marks Russian developers of IT products that are used by retail companies, as well as integrators who provide services for the digitalization of the industry.
The map covered over 280 domestic market participants - developers of IT solutions and cash registers, system integrators providing various types of IT services for the digitalization of retail business processes.
When filling the map, analysts used several sources of information, in particular, a knowledge base on TAdviser IT projects, including company questionnaires and a rating of the largest IT suppliers in retail, as well as information from the websites of Russian vendors and integrators.
The project partner was KORUS Consulting, a strategic IT partner for complex changes in business through technology development and digital transformation.
At the request of TAdviser, Gennady Tarantasov, director of retail at KORUS Consulting Group, shared his expert opinion on the priority areas of digitalization of Russian retailers and the dynamics of import substitution in this area.
On priority areas of digitalization of Russian retailers
Retail is now experiencing a large staff shortage, and this is noticeable in the way companies began to rebuild their approach to working with employees. Staff shortages and increasing competition for qualified employees make it necessary to look for flexible HR solutions for finding, adapting, retaining and developing personnel. Approaches that focus on convenient and more frequent pay are becoming a crucial element of retention.
At the same time, the demand for automation is growing, which reduces dependence on personnel and increases operational efficiency at all levels - from the front office to logistics. This is a global trend, but if in the West automation is caused by high labor costs, then in Russia this is an answer to the shortage of personnel and their growing cost. Automating routine operations, implementing BPM systems, and optimizing processes allow employees to focus on more complex tasks, improving overall performance.
Logistics also comes to the fore. ECOM is rising, and with it, transportation costs, especially for the last mile. In order not to get stuck in huge costs, companies are increasingly looking for ways to optimize the entire supply chain. Legislative requirements are added to this, for example, mandatory labeling of goods - which also requires time and resources.
Plus, we see that consumers began to spend more prudently, which also affects the strategy of companies. Retailers have begun to focus more on pricing, resorting to artificial intelligence to model prices and boost profits. The application of AI becomes part of a comprehensive strategy to improve business performance and efficiency.
On the specifics of replacing foreign IT solutions in retail
In import substitution, retail moves without sharp steps - only a smooth, thoughtful transition. Most often, they replace solutions that have already reached the end of the life cycle or have ceased to perform functions effectively. At the same time, emphasis is placed on Russian developments and open-source solutions.
In the past two years, many products have appeared on the Russian market that close the gaps left by the departed solutions. Among them, for example - "Avandok," Keeprise, KONCRIT. The most difficult thing is the replacement of core-systems of commodity movement - the main core for most large retailers. By and large, there is only 1C on the market, and its functionality is sometimes not enough to close narrow atypical tasks. For small and medium-sized companies, there are solutions that require improvements, but this is quite feasible. For big players, replacing the core is a huge task, requiring the best specialists, who are now quite difficult to find.
Against the background of a glut of new IT solutions, we can expect that the market will follow the path of consolidation, and some companies will eventually leave. It is easier for large retailers - they have the resources to develop their own systems, including WMS or commodity movement solutions. They can afford to maintain large IT departments and switch to microservices, while small and medium-sized businesses are forced to adapt to products on the market.
