2024: Institute Launch
In the structure of the St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI" an innovative scientific unit began work - the Institute of Power Electronics and Photonics. It aims to create advanced electronic components using silicon carbide. This became known on November 6, 2024.
According to TASS, the scientific formation has united specialists from the Center for Microtechnology and Diagnostics with researchers from the Department of Micro- and Nanoelectronics, forming a team of 60 highly qualified employees.
Institute ofThe head of the scientific department of the university, Alexander Semenov, stressed the need to find alternatives to classical silicon technologies that reach their technological limit in the microelectronic industry.
The Scientific Center initiated joint developments with the Rosatom division - the Yu. E. Sedokov Research Institute of Measuring Systems, focusing on the creation of innovative Schottky diodes. In parallel, a partnership is developing with the Alexander Semiconductor Plant for the production of high-purity materials.
The research structure is integrated into the large-scale project "LETIEL," implemented jointly with PJSC "Element." Within the framework of the state program "Priority 2030" it is planned to develop innovative solutions for the industrial sector.
The strategic task of the institute is to form an independent technological base for the Russian electronic industry. The laboratory complex will focus on the synthesis of silicon carbide and the design of photon electronics components.
LETI University, which laid the foundation for European electrotechnical education in 1886, continues to train engineering personnel, teaching 11 thousand students and maintaining the status of the country's leading technological university.[1]
