At the end of November 2024, Figure AI and the German concern BMW announced significant achievements in the development of the capabilities of walking humanoid robots. An improved android Figure 02 is presented, which can be used in the production of cars.
According to the developers, Figure 02 is the world's first commercially viable autonomous humanoid robot. Its height is about 168 cm, weight - 70 kg. The car is capable of walking at speeds up to 4.32 km/h, and the payload mass reaches 20 kg. The battery pack lasts for about five hours of autonomous operation.
Figure 02 combines the benefits of human form and advanced artificial intelligence, making it beyond single-function robots. Figure 02 is capable of supporting manufacturing, logistics, warehousing and retail, says Figure AI. |
It is claimed that the new robot is 400% faster compared to the original model, while the accuracy of operations has increased sevenfold. As an example, the placement of a sheet of metal in a slot less than 1 cm wide is given: such an operation requires the accuracy of actions at the level of one millimeter. At the production site, Figure 02 is able to carry out up to 1000 operations on moving facilities every day. This figure will increase as the AI model underlying the robot improves.
Figure 02 became the first walking humanoid robot integrated into production processes at the BMW plant: it is used at the concern's enterprise in Spartanburg. At the same time, Figure AI attracted an investment of $675 million as part of the Series B funding round from OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, etc.[1]
