2024: Shot in New York
On December 5, 2024, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed outside a hotel in New York in a "deliberate, pre-planned and targeted attack."
Thompson was on his way to a UnitedHealth Group investor conference where he was due to give a talk when an armed man approached from behind and "shot" Thompson several times. The attacker shot at least once in Thompson's back and at least once in his right calf, police said. It is known that the attacker "waited in ambush for several minutes."
Surveillance footage shows the attacker approaching Thompson from behind, opening fire and running back just in case, but continuing to fire until Thompson fell to the ground. The shooter fled the crime scene and then fled on a rented bike. He was last seen in Central Park.
Detective Chief Joseph Kenney said the attacker arrived at the scene about five minutes before the shooting began. According to the police report, "many pedestrians passed by the attacker, but he appeared to be awaiting the arrival of his intended target."
Three 9mm live rounds and three 9mm fired casings were found at the crime scene, as well as a mobile phone discarded nearby. The attack is believed to have been planned.
The motive for this murder is currently unknown, but the victim is believed to have been targeted. At the moment, though, we don't know why. |
Thompson, who lives in Minnesota, was pronounced dead after being admitted to Mount Sinai West Hospital. His wife, Paulette Thompson, said the husband had previously received threats, but she did not know the details.[1]
