History

2024: Cyberattack that led to billions of dollars in losses

On March 27, 2024, the US State Department announced a $10 million reward for information about ransomware hackers who caused billions of dollars in losses to the US health care system. We are talking about the hacker group ALPHV BlackCat, which carries out cyber attacks using ransomware viruses.

The State Department said in a statement that ALPHV BlackCat attackers are attacking critical information infrastructure facilities in the United States and around the world. After entering the target system, hackers disable security tools, encrypt data and demand a ransom, threatening to publish confidential information on the Internet.

It is noted that the group has been operating since November 2021. Moreover, ALPHV BlackCat cybercriminals offer their ransomware-as-a-service malware: that is, other attackers can order data encryption for a fee in the IT system of a particular company or organization. It is claimed that it was the ALPHV BlackCat group that attacked the technology division of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States. This attack turned into huge losses. Especially significant losses were suffered by community health centers, which serve more than 30 million poor and uninsured patients. At the same time, UnitedHealth itself paid a ransom of $22 million to restore its systems. On March 25, 2024, UnitedHealth announced the distribution of more than $2 billion to affected medical facilities. This financial assistance is designed to help them deal with the disruption caused by the attack.

The State Department offers a reward "for information that allows you to identify or locate any person who, acting on instructions or under the leadership of the government of another country, participates in malicious cyber activities against critical US infrastructure."[2]
