2025: Creating a Speech Disorder Diagnostic Application

Specialists from the Center for Language and Brain HSE have developed an application for diagnosing speech disorders (aphasia) that occur as a result of head injuries strokes , or other neurological diseases. AvtoRAT is a standardized digital tool in Russia that allows you to assess the presence and severity of speech pathologies. The application is available in, RuStore it can be used on mobile tablet and devices on. This was announced operating system Android on January 28, 2025 by the press service of the Higher School of Economics.

As reported, about 450 thousand cases of stroke are recorded annually in Russia, while about a third of patients face aphasia. Aphasia is an acquired disorder of speech. A person with aphasia loses the ability to understand speech, speak, read, write. Aphasia can occur due to brain damage, including as a result of stroke, head injury, and tumor removal. The diagnosis is established by doctors based on clinical symptoms and neuropsychological examination data. It is important to diagnose aphasia in time, since working with a speech therapist and neuropsychologist will allow you to quickly restore speech and regain the lost quality of life.

Researchers at the HSE Center for Language and Brain have developed a standardized digital tool called AvtoRAT, which allows you to identify aphasia and assess its severity. When creating materials for the application, not only the linguistic characteristics of words, sentences and texts included in the set of stimuli were taken into account, but also psycholinguistic factors. For example, the age of assimilation of words, the frequency of their use, how easy it is for a person to imagine the image of an object associated with this word, as well as the complexity of images of specific stimuli, were taken into account. With the help of the AvtoRAT application, diagnostics can be carried out in just 60 minutes, providing accurate data for the development of a rehabilitation program.

The battery of tests includes a complex of 13 different tasks with which it is possible to assess the safety of all main language levels: phonological, lexico-semantic, syntactic and discourse levels. Using these tasks, it is possible to identify violations of the understanding, generation and repetition of speech, obtain information about the overall severity of speech disorders and compare the results with the age norm.

Speech understanding tasks (for example, distinguishing sounds, understanding words, sentences and texts) are automatically processed in the application. In order to obtain results on speech generation and repetition tasks (for example, naming objects and actions, compiling sentences and stories on a picture, repeating words and sentences), a detailed system of manual assessment by the user was developed. Due to this, it is possible to identify all the features of speech disorders of each specific participant.

Individual participant cards are stored in the application for further analysis of results. AvtoRAT allows you to record the dynamics of speech recovery and thus assess the effectiveness of the treatment used, which is extremely important for further prognosis and selection of a rehabilitation program. All results are available for upload as a table, which is convenient for research work.

AvtoRAT will become a useful tool for speech therapists, neuropsychologists, researchers and clinical specialists. In addition, it will be useful to medical institutions, students and teachers of medical and linguistic areas, developers of rehabilitation programs, scientific centers engaged in research on cognitive and linguistic processes.
