OpenBPM: Camunda Modular Alternative for Process Automation
Against the backdrop of growing requirements for scalability and flexibility of BPM systems, the Russian OpenBPM platform is becoming an alternative to Camunda. It is designed for developers who care about open source, modularity, and high performance, and helps businesses implement change and integration faster. Switching to OpenBPM does not reset investments already made: compatibility with BPMN 2.0 and familiar tools simplifies migration and reduces risk.
Modern technologies are changing expectations and requirements for corporate systems. The emergence of AI agents, the growth of personalization and the spread of cross-platform applications set a new level of interaction with the digital environment. On the backend side, scalability, cloud and distributed architectures, support for streaming data are key. All this requires the developers to be able to quickly adapt and master new approaches, and from automation platforms - open architecture and flexibility, which are embedded in the Russian OpenBPM. Inclusion in the register of Russian software
At the end of August 2025 Register of Russian Software , the OpenBPM platform is included, designed to replace the 7 engine business processes Camunda , support for which ceases in October 2025. This was Haulmont (Howlmont) announced on September 11, 2025.
OpenBPM the Russian is a platform for improving the efficiency of process development commands. Its core is the OpenBPM business processes Engine engine, which is a fork of Camunda 7, open source an engine that stops supporting in October 2025. OpenBPM Engine is fully compatible API with Camunda 7, so it provides easy migration of existing solutions to the new engine.
Productivity tools are available within the OpenBPM platform:
- Studio is a plugin for OpenIDE/IntelliJ IDEA for developers.
- Control is a tool for monitoring and managing BPM engines.
- Tasklist is a ready-made application for working with end user tasks.
- Workspace is a visual tool for designing and debugging business processes.
In August, a free open source version of the OpenBPM Community engine, published in the GitFlic repository, also became available.
OpenBPM was introduced by Howlmont in February 2025. The product team has experience in creating tools for developers and improving development efficiency. The Houlmont team provides development for OpenBPM and support for the developer community. Due to the tools available within the platform, it is possible to increase the productivity of process development commands compared to traditional development, with BPMS and low-code systems.

OpenBPM Platform Announcement
On February 5, 2025, Haulmont introduced OpenBPM, an integrated process application development platform on the Javaopen source stack.
As reported, the open source platform OpenBPM is designed to improve the efficiency of process development teams, including analysts, developers and administrators. OpenBPM platform components enable flexible development and are applicable at any level of enterprise process maturity and in any industry. At the same time, you can use the platform at any stage of work on the project. As of February 2025, OpenBPM supports the Camunda 7 engine, and support for other engines will also be implemented in the future. The OpenBPM platform helps to form process development teams and organize their collaboration on business tasks. Programmers will be able to use the entire palette of modern development tools, including DevOps practices and an arbitrary frontend stack. Also, the process platform will help in the orchestration of microservices and when implementing modern practices from the Event-Driven BPMP world at the enterprise.
For February 2025, the following OpenBPM modules were released:
- OpenBPM Control. Open-source web service for administrators, which allows you to manage the execution of business processes, support and resolve conflicts between process applications on BPM engines Camunda 7 and OpenBPM Engine.
- OpenBPM Studio. Expand the development environment in IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition or OpenIDE for free to increase team productivity when building new and refining existing process applications.
In 2025, the following will be released:
- OpenBPM TaskList. Open-source web application for displaying and working with user tasks, which allows developers to build "hubs" for task execution, when the task flow is synchronized from different instances of process engines, and execution is delegated to different application applications.
- OpenBPM Engine. Professional BPM engine from Russian the vendor for execution, business processes fully compatible API with the Camunda 7 engine.
- OpenBPM Workspace. An interactive web tool to increase the productivity of analyst teams when automating processes using visual designers and AI assistants. For OpenBPM Control and OpenBPM Studio, a version with advanced functionality will subsequently be released in addition to the free version.
OpenBPM will help optimize the efficiency of process development in any area: banks, power, telecom, transport, industry, public sector. The platform makes it possible to radically reduce costs and reduce time-to-market indicators. Complex cases can be implemented up to 3 times faster than in the version without using process engines, and at the same time up to 4 times cheaper than with traditional BPMS and Low-Code platforms on the planning horizon in 3-5 years.
Optimal design and debugging environment:
- BPMN 2.0-Enabled Business Process Web Modeller and Organization Context
- Exchange models with developers in BPMN 2.0 format with support for lifecycle management
- A single business process repository with teamwork capabilities
- Web application for testing designed processes with the ability to run, customize, debug and monitor them
All tools are assembled in one place:
- A professional tool in IntelliJ IDEA CE for the productive development of BPM projects from process model to departure in a single development environment
- Integration with a single business process repository of business analysts in StormBPMN
- Administrative web application for debugging and monitoring business processes under development
- Customizable application template for managing user tasks on the React frontend technology
