2025: Onyx LED Screen Announcement (ICD Model)
On April 3, 2025, Samsung Electronics introduced the Onyx LED screen (ICD model).
According to the company, Samsung Onyx provides a cinematic experience with optimal black color, contrast and color accuracy. The screen supports refresh rates of up to 4K 120Hz, providing smooth movement and crisp details.
Each cinema hall has a unique size, and the different requirements for screens in them differ. To meet current needs, Onyx offers four standard sizes and additional scaling options, allowing theaters to use the available space without losing image quality:
- 5 meters - an option for boutique and small halls (pixel spacing 1.25 mm);
- 10 meters - industry standard for premium cinemas (pixel spacing 2.5 mm);
- 14 meters - universal format for mass cinemas (pixel spacing 3.3 mm);
- 20 meters - a solution for large premium halls (pixel spacing 5.0 mm).
Samsung Onyx LED screens support 2.39: 1 (scope) and 1.85: 1 (flat) aspect ratios, which allows movies to be broadcast in their original formats without the need for additional adjustments. When zooming in on an image, Onyx maintains aspect proportions by zooming in on the screen without distortion.
Unlike traditional projectors, which can look dull in large rooms and have problems playing bright scenes, the increased brightness of Onyx provides more detailed shadows, intense light accents and optimal color accuracy. Thanks to HDR technology, Samsung Onyx reaches a peak brightness of 300 nits. As a result, scenes with high brightness retain their volume, do not look blurred or overexposed.
Optimal brightness and color accuracy provide a clear and rich image even in brightly lit rooms, making Onyx a suitable solution for showing alternative content: sports broadcasts, concerts, esports events and business presentations.
The Onyx is designed to last, offering a standard three-year warranty with the option to extend coverage to 10 years. Expanded coverage reduces total cost of ownership and provides long-term investment value for theater owners.
To maintain optimal image quality, Samsung offers an automatic calibration solution that allows cinemas to easily adjust screens both during installation and during scheduled maintenance.
In addition, Onyx is compatible with Dolby and GDC media servers, making it easier for movie halls to switch to other equipment from traditional projection systems. This ensures smooth content playback and efficient management of cinema networks.
Onyx is fully compatible with theater audio solutions, including Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, QSC, and custom-designed sound systems, giving theaters the ability to customize sound to meet their unique requirements. For theaters that use HARMAN JBL surround sound technology, Onyx also offers seamless integration and optimal sound quality.
