World's first eSports Olympics to be held in Saudi Arabia
In mid-July 2024, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the first Olympic Games on eSports 2025 will be held in Saudi Arabia. The IOC has entered into an agreement with the Saudi National Olympic Committee (NOC) for 12 years, during which the esports Olympics will be held regularly.
This decision is due to the pronounced increase in the importance of sports in Saudi Arabia as a whole, as well as the social and economic transformations of the country, in which more than a hundred international events are held for athletes, including e-sports, football, motorsport, tennis, equestrian sports and golf, attracting more than 2.6 million sports fans.
As a result, sport is an increasingly important part of daily life in Saudi Arabia at all levels, from amateur to elite. The overall level of participation in the sport has more than tripled since 2015, and almost half of the country's population now participates in sporting events. The number of sports federations also tripled during this time, from 32 to 98, with the Saudi Federation of eSports being one example of such growth. About 67% of the population of Saudi Arabia consider themselves gamers, while the number of professional e-sportsmen who make a career on an ongoing basis is constantly growing (now there are 100 of them).
In particular, women's sports are also growing rapidly, and almost half of Saudi Arabia's 23 million gamers are women. The Federation lists have more than 330,000 female athletes and nearly 40 women's national teams competing internationally. Grassroots sports are also thriving, with sport firmly in the school curriculum for all girls, as evidenced by the 70,000 schoolgirls who play in the school football league each week. In addition to sports, the reforms ensure the representation of women in the councils of all sports federations: now they number more than 100 women, including seven female presidents of federations. In addition, all female and male athletes are equally rewarded for representing the nation in competition in their sport.[1]

Esportsmen from Russia refused to qualify for the World Cup without a flag
Esportsmen from Russia refused to qualify for the IESF-2024 World Cup without a flag. This was reported in the press service of the Federation of Computer Sports (CSF) of the Russian Federation in mid-May 2024.
According to the IESF requirement, in Russia they had to "force esports players to play without a flag" in order to be allowed to the World Cup. The CSF previously opposed such conditions, but they were not changed. In this regard, the federation decided to refuse to participate in the tournament.
The reason was the unlawful actions of the secretariat, which, contrary to the charter and decisions of the governing bodies, opposes the participation of Russian athletes. Through numerous bureaucratic tricks, delays and direct pressure, the IESF Secretary General put the CSF of Russia before the choice: either sign a voluntary refusal of the flag for all participating athletes, or not participate in the World Cup. Such actions completely contradict the decision of the IESF congress, where the majority of federations voted for the complete lifting of sanctions from the CSF of Russia and the return of national symbols. Nevertheless, the secretariat notified us on April 27 [2024] that we were suspended from the competition for not signing the agreement, the CSF said. |
As of May 2024, the IESF includes 143 countries. The organization holds world championships in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Tekken 7, eFootball, PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The qualifying competition for the 2024 World Esports Championships will begin in June 2024.
Earlier, the IESF returned the flag to the Russians, after which all Ukrainians withdrew from the World Cup, and the Ukrainian federation later threatened to leave the organization. In January 2024, after a complaint from the Ukrainian side that the CSF of Russia began working in the regions that joined in 2022, the IESF suspended Russia's membership.[2]

The volume of the Russian e-sports market in 2022 reached $35.08 million against $31.33 million. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company Statista, which became known in November 2023.
According to Vedomosti, citing Statista materials, the e-sports market in the Russian Federation is on the rise and will continue to grow at least until 2027, when revenue in the market will be measured at $52.9 million.
Konstantin Sakhnov, co-founder of the Vengeance Games studio, in a conversation with the publication, noted that esports competitions and computer games tournaments have mainly moved from Russia to other regions.
Now our segment of e-sports can be described as more national and independent, - he added in mid-November 2023. |
Since the spring of 2022, the largest Russian e-sports clubs have begun to deprive them of the right to participate in international competitions. For example, the organizer of CS: GO ESL Electronic Sports League (ESL) tournaments suspended the Russian clubs Virtus.pro and Gambit from the ESL Pro League tournament.
Professional Russian esports in the form in which it was until 2022 no longer exists, a source close to one of the leading teams that left the Russian Federation told Kommersant. - Large clubs owned by Russian companies were sold because they were not allowed to the largest international tournaments. |
One of the newspaper's informants estimated the volume of the Russian e-sports market in the Russian Federation at $10 million in 2022, which, according to the source, is half the figure a year ago. Expert "Technologies of Trust" (TeDo, former Russian office of PwC) Kirill Tikhonov agrees that due to the relocation or closure of key organizations, the volume of the professional segment of eSports has noticeably decreased[4]
The Government of the Russian Federation approved the introduction of e-sports disciplines in universities
In mid-December 2022, the government's Digital Development Commission approved roadmaps "New Industrial Software" and "New System-Wide Software." According to one of the documents, by 2024, courses in e-sports disciplines should be included in the program of Russian universities, both for technical and humanitarian specialties.
As they write, in the Vedomosti approved roadmap, the responsible performers for the first stage are indicated Rostelecom and. St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications named after Prof. M. A. Bonch-Bruevich (SPbGUT) Until the beginning of 2023, they must conduct a study and find examples of supplementing existing educational programs with esports disciplines in other countries. Then, by June 2023, Rostelecom ANO "Digital Economy" should gather a working group of representatives of the expert and university community. By 2024, the first educational programs should be determined "for implementation in interested higher educational institutions with the help of interested companies," follows from the document.
According to Yaroslav Meshalkin, Director of Strategic Communications at ESforce Holding, the new government initiative will help attract more students to universities.
The presence of esports programs increases the attractiveness of living in college campuses, promotes student recruitment and diversifies learning, he says. - Statistics show that 44% of educational institutions need to stimulate interest in training in technical specialties (STEM). |
Pavel Golubev, director of the eSports Development Association and LANGAME project manager, believes that in this matter it is necessary to separate two concepts: "gaming" and "eSports."
If we are talking about the broader concept of "gaming," then in view of the latest initiatives of the state to support the gaming industry, this is a fairly logical and correct step, the expert says. - At least, this will allow to try at least partially to compensate for the shortage of personnel for the implementation of these state programs.[5] |

In the near future, this will allow millions of Russians to realize their potential as professional e-sportsmen in these types of programs. Both domestically and in the international arena, - said the President of the CSF of Russia Dmitry Smith. |
Recognition of this discipline allows you to hold official competitions, such as the championship and the Cup of Russia in computer sports, on the above types of programs in the Russian Federation. According to Smith (his statement was published on May 26, 2022), in the near future it is planned to include tournaments in the new discipline in the official plan of mass competitions of the CSF of Russia.
We have long expected the recognition of the official discipline "Tactical Three-Dimensional Combat." Such popular and favorite types of programs as CS: GO and Valorant have long been included in the pool of disciplines of Moscow Esports and the Moscow Student Esports League, which are supported by the Moscow Department of Sports on the cybermos.ru site, but we could not include competitions on them in a single calendar of sports competitions. Now there is such an opportunity. It will allow us to issue sports categories for these types of programs and form national teams of the capital. This will give a new incentive and prospects for e-sports in Moscow and Russia as a whole, "said Maxim Flyor, President of the Moscow Computer Sports Federation.[6]" |
