Building a Highly Reliable AI Scanner for Document Recognition

VTB and T1 have developed a highly accurate, highly reliable AI scanner for document recognition. The bank announced this on December 8, 2025.

The solution can work both on Russian and foreign devices and has already been introduced into the remote registration services of VTB banking products. With its help, it is planned to optimize the registration of about 500 thousand banking products every month.

The AI scanner recognizes information from client identity documents such as passport, birth certificate, SNILS, etc. Specially developed at VTB algorithmic intelligence ensure high accuracy of data recognition, and the integration of the service into the internal systems of the bank ensures the protection of personal information and its safe storage.

The solution is already used in the provision of VTB field service services. To quickly recognize information, a bank employee just needs to bring the document to the camera of the device, which is used for field service, and within a few seconds the AI scanner will extract the necessary data about the client, thereby significantly speeding up the registration of banking products.

As part of the work on the AI scanner, VTB has developed several dozen different algorithms artificial intelligence and data analysis, which are responsible for sorting and identification systematization of the scanned information , etc. T1 specialists have developed application software libraries for use on mobile devices of retail divisions of the bank even in the absence of Internet a connection.

We see how AI technologies are making getting banking services faster and more comfortable for our customers. At the same time, ensuring the security of personal data and financial information is one of the main priorities for us in the technological development of the bank, "said Maxim Konovalikhin, Senior Vice President, Head of Data Analysis and Modeling at VTB Bank.

Creating a highly accurate document recognition system that works completely autonomously on a mobile device is a technological challenge. Solving such problems requires deep expertise in the field of computer vision and artificial intelligence. This product was developed and implemented in the bank's processes in a short time - in just 6 months. The AI scanner, built on advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, surpasses recognized industry leaders in key indicators and provides a new level of service and user experience for our customers, "said Evgeny Ivanov, Vice President, Head of Technological Development of VTB Business Support Systems.

Our technologies automate and significantly speed up routine processes, as well as minimize errors in data processing without loss of quality. At the same time, increasing speed, we do not lose accuracy, reliability and safety - on the contrary, we strengthen these parameters by optimizing algorithms. All this forms a new level of client experience for VTB users - said Sergey Golitsyn, head of AI T1 (part of IT holding T1).

Plan to implement an AI solution for routing a banking product delivery service

VTB plans to introduce a single AI solution for routing the delivery service for banking products. The development, created by the T1 IT holding, was presented on April 17, 2025.

A single solution calculates routes for outbound managers of the bank who deliver banking products to VTB customers. The T1 solution will allow combining the disparate IT systems of Russian and foreign developers, which the bank uses for April 2025, and optimizing logistics processes. VTB expects to implement the solution by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

The introduction of a single solution with an advanced level of analytics and artificial intelligence will allow the bank to optimize logistics resources, which will lead to a reduction in costs when improving the quality of service, - said Maxim Konovalikhin, Senior Vice President, Head of Data Analysis and Modeling at VTB Bank.

The built-in AI module allows the solution to flexibly adapt to the current goals of the bank. Depending on the tasks set, artificial intelligence will either distribute all routes evenly between all the managers involved in the specified location, or build routes for the minimum required number of employees in order to free up the remaining ones for other tasks.

The data analysis module also allows the solution to build routes taking into account not only the time and distance, but also the competence of employees, their method of movement, as well as the availability or lack of access to certain types of banking products. The solution validates and corrects geodata, reducing dependence on external providers of such information.

There is a shortage of complex Russian solutions in the logistics services market. Our team managed to create a system on the most innovative stack and without the use of foreign components. The product code is developed entirely in Russia, while we strive to minimize the use of open source libraries, which indicates both the maximum degree of localization of expertise and the possibilities of supporting and adapting the developed solutions to any customer needs. All this meets strict security requirements in one of the largest banks in the country, - commented Sergey Golitsyn, head, AI T1 (part of the T1 IT holding).
