A robot surgeon for joint replacement has been introduced in the Orenburg Regional Clinical Hospital

Customers: Orenburg Regional Voinov Clinical Hospital

Pharmaceuticals, Medicine, Healthcare

Contractors: Smith & Nephew
Product: Cori (robot surgeon)

Project date: 2025/08

The Orenburg Regional Clinical Hospital named after V.I. Voinova launched a robotic surgery program for knee arthroplasty operations using the mobile CORI system. This became known on August 18, 2025.

The innovative technology allows surgeons to perform interventions with jewelry precision, creating 3D models of joints and calculating resection parameters to within a millimeter. The first robot-assisted operations in the region were carried out by a leading Russian specialist, chairman of the Russian Association of Knee Surgeons Alexei Karpukhin.

The introduction of robotic technologies represents a significant breakthrough in the development of traumatology and orthopedics for residents of the Orenburg region. The modern system eliminates the need for long-term preoperative preparation and expensive computed tomography studies.

The CORI robotic system functions as an intelligent surgeon's assistant, creating a detailed three-dimensional model of the knee joint directly during surgery. The technology provides accurate planning of each stage of the operation, taking into account the individual anatomical characteristics of the patient.

Alexey Karpukhin, who conducted the first operations in Orenburg, noted that robotic surgery represents a new level of development of orthopedics. According to him, modern technologies allow us to achieve results that were previously unattainable when using traditional methods.

A key advantage of the CORI system is the ability to minimize damage to healthy tissues during surgery. The robot performs the function of a surgeon's "third eye," turning surgery into highly accurate engineering design with mathematical calculations.[1]
