2022: Launch of a robot surgeon for total hip prosthetics
On January 26, 2022, Smith + Nephew announced the expansion of the capabilities of its Cori surgical system to include total hip prosthetics.
The London company has already developed a portable robotic system for total knee endoprosthetics. The new indication with RI.Hip Navigation could help maximize accuracy and reproducibility by ensuring that components are aligned individually for each patient with THA, the company said.
In 2021, the company conducted a study and concluded that computer technology for THA significantly reduces the risk of revision and increases patient satisfaction with Smith + Nephew implants. The study used data from the world's largest endoprosthesis registry (the National Combined Registry of England, Wales and Northern Ireland) to examine the impact of THA computer surgery on implant engraftability. Data presented in the THA surgery report, performed using Smith + Nephew hip prosthetics components implanted to treat osteoarthritis since 2003, were presented at the 2021 World Congress on Endoprosthetics. The results demonstrated:
- A significantly lower revision rate after 10 years with computer imaging (1.06%) compared to conventional THA (3.88%; p = 0,005);
- The risk of revision after 10 years is 55% lower when managing a computer compared to conventional THA (p = 0.038);
- Significantly higher patient satisfaction in the computer-controlled group compared to conventional THA (p = 0.003).
Adding RI.Hip Navigation to the Cori system further strengthens Smith + Nephew's Real Intelligence digital ecosystem and highlights our commitment to improving clinical outcomes of total hip endoprosthesis, said Randy Kilburn, executive vice president and general manager for reconstruction , robotics and digital surgery, in a press release. - We look forward to offering the opportunity to further improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction to the wider surgeon community through the rapidly growing introduction of our Cori surgical system. |
RI.Hip navigation from Smith + Nephew received FDA approval 510 (k) for use in the Cori system. The company said the software installation will begin immediately for a limited number of hospitals and outpatient surgery centers USA in with widespread commercial availability at the end of 2022. In the future, it will be introduced in the markets Europe of the Asia-Pacific region as soon as appropriate regulatory approvals are received.[1]
2020: Announcement of Cori - robot surgeon from Smith & Nephew
In mid-July 2020, the British company Smith & Nephew released a new generation Cori robotic surgical system. It is designed for total and single-component knee prosthetics. It should be much faster and more efficient than the previous Smith & Nephew Navio system.
In addition to Cori, the company is also launching a set of Real Intelligence solutions for digital surgery, which are designed for preoperative planning, digital and robotic surgery, postoperative evaluation and results control.
The introduction of Cori's portable robotic platform and tools for digital surgery are the first steps in a long-term strategy to promote orthopedics using the latest technologies, "said Skip Kiil, president of the orthopedic division of Smith & Nephew, at a press release. |
The launch of the Smith & Nephew Cori system is another stage in the competition of major medical equipment manufacturers. All of them are striving to overtake Stryker, which is enjoying success thanks to its Mako robotic systems working in the field of orthopedic surgery.
Smith & Nephew describes the new Cori system as compact and portable, so it can be used in special centers for outpatient operations. Compared to the Navio system, the Cori camera runs more than four times faster, and cut technology can handle twice as much in the same time. The modular design of the Cori system means that Smith & Nephew can scale Cori production and adapt it to handle other types of orthopedic operations. Representatives of the company note that they intend to continue the development of new applications.[2]
