Main article: History of music in Russia

First production: Venice, 1778; first performance in the USSR (concert): Kyiv, January 17, 1984

The libretto of "Alcida" is composed for I. A. Hasse. Its full title is "Alkyd at the Crossroads."

The plot is based on the allegory of the philosopher of the 5th century BC. e. Prodica, known from the presentation of Xenophon. The ancient Greek hero Alcides (Hercules) met two women at a crossroads: one of them personified Depravity, the other - Virtue. He had to make a choice of life path, and despite the temptations of Depravity, he chose the path of Virtue.

Metastasio, and after him Bortnyansky, put this parable in artistic form. In opera, the personification of two opposite principles is Edonida and Aretea. The first draws a world of thoughtless pleasures and joys before Alcides, while the second does not hide the fact that on the righteous path of the hero lies in wait for many dangers and trials that require considerable courage. It is not easy for a young man to make a choice, but he is not afraid of trials and defeats temptations. Edonida admits that he is right and decides to share his heroic deeds.

In the music of Bortnyansky, the mental struggle of Alcides is conveyed, the images of Aretea and Edonida are vividly outlined.

It is customary to define the genre of "Alkida" as an opera series. This is not entirely fair. Bortnyansky's work lacks external action, it is an opera allegory that contains a moral lesson.
