Allergy treatment

Is it possible to cure allergies?

For 2020, allergen-specific immunotherapy is used to treat allergies. It consists in subcutaneous (or sublingual) administration of increasing doses of antigen (allergen). When the concentrations become very large, the body's reaction to the allergen changes, and the allergy as such disappears - after treatment it can take years.

This is perhaps the only therapy aimed not at the symptoms, but at the disease itself, "disease-modifying therapy," if in a smart way. There are disadvantages - not all allergies are treated, not common in Russia, etc.

Pollen and house dust reactions are treatable. And also on the poison of stinging insects.

In 2023, 97.5 million packages of antiallergic drugs were delivered to the Russian market. This is 4.6% more than the previous year. Such data are given in the study, the results of which were published at the end of March 2024.

Among Russian companies - suppliers of drugs against allergies, the leaders are Ozone Pharmaceuticals, Binnopharm Group and Vertex. They, according to the MSK1.RU resource, referring to data from RNC Pharma, by the end of 2023 controlled almost half (48%) of all sales of domestic anti-allergies. In general, foreign companies are leading in the Russian market: the Hungarian Egis (produces drugs such as Suprastin and Suprastinex), the Indian Radish (Cetrin and Allervay) and the Belgian USB Pharma (Zirtek and Xizal). According to Nikolai Bespalov, Development Director of the analytical company RNC Pharma, the supplies of these manufacturers not only remain stable, but also demonstrate positive dynamics. At the same time, in 2023, the volume of shipments of the French company Sanofi, the German Bayer Helsker and the Israeli Teva decreased.

Maria Marilova, an allergist at the BestDoctor group of companies, notes that the number of children and adults with allergies is growing annually in Russia. This is partly due to improved diagnosis. Another factor is adverse environmental factors, such as the high concentration of pollutants in the air. In addition, allergic reactions can provoke food "grown or produced using various chemicals." Against the background of an increase in demand for antiallergic drugs among Russians, prices for these drugs are also growing.[1]

18% of Russians are susceptible to allergies

About 18% of Russians suffer from allergies, while depending on the region, this share varies within 20-23%. This was announced in April 2023 by the head of the laboratory of clinical pharmacology at the Institute of Immunology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Valery Smirnov.

According to him, according to the European Association of Clinical Allergists-Immunologists, there are 23% of allergies in Europe, and by 2030 this figure may grow to 25%.

If we talk about the Russian Federation, then in principle the percentage according to the Russian Association of Clinical Immunologists and Allergists is slightly lower, about 18%, but this may be due to the reluctance of patients to go to the doctor and self-medicate, Smirnov said.

He added that the largest number of visits to allergists for seasonal allergies are recorded in the Rostov and Sverdlovsk regions, as well as in the North Caucasus region.

This report says that the majority of Russians are allergic to food (70%). In second place was the reaction to pollen (54%) - every second respondent faced it. Dust and mold close the top three allergens - 50% of respondents experience discomfort from them. The top 5 most common stimuli also included pet hair (40%) and cold (36%). It is noted that the most frequent symptoms of allergies were skin redness and itching (74%), runny nose (59%), watery eyes (51%), difficulty breathing and dry cough (22%).

It also follows from the study, most often residents of Tyumen (88%), Yekaterinburg (85%) and Tomsk (85%) face allergies.
