Assiut

Modern Arabic Asyut (dr.-egip. Southey, Greek Lycopolis "wolf city") is located on the western bank of the Nile, on a fertile plain, 20 km long from the Libyan ridge to the Arabian).

To the west of the city, on the Libyan ridge, are the burials of the nomarchs of ancient Southey. First of all, we should mention the wonderful cave tomb of the nomarch Hepjef (during the reign of the pharaoh KhІІ dynasty - Senusert І). The site is now called Stubl Antar. Above, in the rocks, are other tombs.

The main local god in Southee was Upout (translated this name means "path opener" - guide, scout). It was a local chthonic deity, depicted as a jackal or wolf.

The omission of the deity is very militant, judging by the fact that he was the guide and scout of a group of deities who in mythical times, when gods and demigods ruled on earth, "companions of the Choir," accompanied the falcon god Nehen (Greek Gierakonpol, see Aswan), identified with the Choir, during his campaign in Lower Egypt.

According to mythological data, there were several hypostases of Upout, including the Lower Egyptian Upout - a product of late theological creativity.

In Southey, Anubis, a jackal-like god who later merged with Upout, was also worshipped. Anubis appears in the myths about Osiris, participates in his burial. The texts of Anubis mention either as the son of the goddess Bastet, or as the son of Osiris (or Ra), or as the son of the white divine cow Hesat.

Both jackal-like gods Upout and Anubis were often mentioned in funeral texts: they were addressed by relatives of the deceased with a prayer for patronage of the deceased in the otherworldly world.

In Southee there was also a temple of Osiris.

Kau el Kebir (Tiebu, Anteopolis)

In Kau el Kebir, which in the time of Ancient Egypt was called Thiebu (the Greek name Anteopolis), the god Seth was honored, who, according to the myth, killed his brother Osiris.
