2025: Mass protests with 500,000 participants
On Saturday, March 15, 2025, an anti-government action was held in Serbia, which became the largest in the history of the modern state: about 500 thousand people gathered in Belgrade. The spontaneous student protest, which began after the tragedy in Novi Sad, when the collapse of the roof led to the death of people, escalated into a real nationwide movement.
Despite the impressive number of participants (for Belgrade this is a lot) and the attempts of provocateurs to sow chaos in a peaceful protest, everything went relatively calmly.
President Vucic, in his emergency address at the end of the processions, thanked citizens and representatives of law enforcement agencies for their restraint.
In Pioneer Park, where a tent camp was set up for opponents of the protests who call themselves "students 2.0," there were provocations, but serious clashes and victims were avoided.
Representatives of the student movement, which is the driving force behind the current protests in Serbia, played a special role in this. When cobblestones, bottles and other improvised means flew at the police, they announced the end of the action. It is worth noting the endurance of representatives of law enforcement agencies.
Nevertheless, 56 people applied for medical help at the end of the evening, 22 instigators were detained.
One of the main incidents was a stampede as a result of panic during a minute of silence in memory of those killed in Novi Sad. The Web is actively distributing videos allegedly proving the use of a "sound gun" by the Serbian authorities against peaceful demonstrators.
