2024: The volume of the Russian biomedicine market grew by 9% over the year and reached ₽311 billion

In early May 2025, the analytical company BusinesStat published data on the biotechnology market in medicine and biopharmaceuticals in Russia. According to the study, in 2024 the turnover of this sector increased by 9% compared to 2023 and reached ₽311 billion.

According to BusinesStat, the key factors in the growth of the market were state support for import substitution programs for biotechnological products, the construction of new production facilities and the expansion of existing capacities, as well as the localization of the production of imported drugs in Russia. A significant contribution to the positive dynamics was made by the growth of the laboratory diagnostics segment, including the development of new diagnostic systems.

Over the past five years, the biomedical technology market has shown uneven dynamics. In 2020, its volume was ₽223 billion, after which in 2021 there was a significant increase of 22% to ₽271 billion, associated with increased demand for medical technologies in the context of post-pandemic recovery. In 2022, the positive trend remained - the market grew by 14% to ₽309 billion. However, in 2023 there was a decline of 8% to ₽285 billion, due to the adjustment of demand after the active phase of the pandemic, limited access to imported technologies and components, as well as a decrease in investment activity.

Biomedicine is an interdisciplinary field of science combining knowledge of biology, medicine and engineering to study the human body, its functioning in norm and pathology, and to develop methods for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. This field relies on advances in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics, actively using modern technologies, including bioinformatics and biomedical engineering.[1]

2021: The number of marriages in biomedical work in the world has quadrupled in 20 years

In early June 2024, researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain reported that the number of recalled scientific papers in the biomedical field quadrupled between 2000 and 2021. Two-thirds of the work was withdrawn due to data misuse, plagiarism and data fraud.

The results of our investigation show that over the past 20 years in Europe, the number of violations in the conduct of scientific research has significantly increased, the authors note.

The number of recalled scientific papers in the biomedical field has quadrupled

In recent years, publishers of scientific journals have faced growing discontent with the biomedical community, and in 2023 a record number of documents were withdrawn - over 10,000 scientific articles. Although not all works were withdrawn due to fraud, only about 16% of reviews were related to unintentional errors of researchers. At the same time, the reasons for the withdrawal of articles over 20 years have changed. In 2000, a large proportion of refutations were related to ethical and legal issues, issues of authorship, including dubious or false authorship, and duplication of images, data, or large amounts of text. By 2020, data duplication was still one of the main reasons for the recall of scientific articles, but a large proportion of the work was withdrawn due to "inaccurate data."

Most articles on biomedical sciences were withdrawn in, Germany,, and Britain. Italy Spain[2]
