Alcohol deaths rise by 20% amid COVID-19 pandemic
In early May 2021, it became known that in 2020, deaths associated with alcohol consumption in England and Wales increased by 20% and reached a record level. According to experts, this is another indirect indicator of the damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to the health and well-being of many people.
According to data from the UK's Office for National Statistics, 7,423 alcohol abuse deaths were recorded across the country in 2020, a 20% increase from 2019. These are the highest rates of alcohol abuse deaths since data collection began in 2001. Over the past three months of 2020, the death rate was 13.6 dead per 100 thousand people.
Experts are extremely concerned about these figures: alcohol has become one of the ways in which people are trying to cope with stress and isolation in the pandemic era. Most of the deaths were associated with long-term alcohol use and, as a result, liver disease, poisoning and mental disabilities. The fact that the explosion in deaths was caused by the pandemic proves the statistics for the first quarter of 2020, which covered the period before the pandemic restrictions and were similar to the data for previous years. Since the end of March, deaths have increased every quarter through the end of the year.
Analysis of data for England also revealed problems of social inequality, especially noticeable against the backdrop of a pandemic. The highest rate of alcohol-related deaths has risen in the most deprived areas of England and Wales. Deaths among men were 4.2 times higher in poor areas than in rich areas, while in 2019 these values only differed by 3.8 times. Experts believe that these data should be carefully taken into account in plans for the country's recovery from the pandemic.[1]
