2025: Ministry of Health: There are 2 million people with cataract in Russia

The number of patients with cataract in Russia is about 2 million people. At the same time, the total incidence reaches almost 1700 cases per 100 thousand of the country's population. Such data were published on October 3, 2025 by the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko.

According to him, cataracts are one of the main causes of blindness in the world, with the prevalence of pathology continuing to grow. With this ailment, clouding of the substance or capsule of the lens occurs, which leads to a decrease in visual acuity.

Ministry of Health: In Russia, there are 2 million people with cataract

Murashko notes that up to 500 thousand operations related to cataract are performed annually in Russia. Of these, approximately 150 thousand are carried out at the National Medical Research Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. In this medical facility, in the surgical treatment of cataracts, up to 30% of cases are carried out with femtosecond care. More than 20,000 multifocal and thoric intraocular lenses are implanted each year. Such operations help patients return to their previous level of social activity and work activity.

The Minister of Health of the Russian Federation also touched upon the topic of keratoplasty - corneal transplantation. Such operations are carried out to restore vision, improve the aesthetics of the eye or relieve pain in various diseases of the cornea, such as keratoconus, bullous keratopathy, ulcers, scarring, extensive injuries, chemical burns, etc.

Corneal transplantation is a high-tech method that allows you to rehabilitate patients with the most complex diseases of the anterior segment of the eye. In the center [Microsurgery of the Eye named after Academician Fedorov], more than 2,000 keratoplastics are performed and it is very important to further develop this direction together with the health authorities in the regions, Murashko notes.[1]
