2022: Sale of 5G frequencies for $1.17 billion
In early February 2022, the Egyptian National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority allocated Orange Egypt and Time Division Duplex frequencies. This decision was a continuation of the tender held by the department to allocate additional frequency bands with a width of 80 MHz in the frequency space of 2.6 thousand. MHz in the TDD system, as a result of which Vodafone Egypt and Telecom Egypt received frequency bands in exchange for $1.17 billion. Both companies signed an additional agreement to license mobile services to allow them to use new frequencies.
This step is also being implemented as part of a comprehensive plan to improve the quality of telecommunications services provided to citizens in Egypt, where standards have been set in the annex to the agreement with companies. It is worth noting that the use of the frequencies that were offered to companies will contribute to a qualitative jump in the quality of telecommunications services and will increase the readiness of these networks to provide future telecommunications and information technology services, taking into account international quality standards, to keep up with the growing demand for telecommunications services in the Egyptian market and support digital transformation operations in Egypt.
Orange Egypt CEO Yasser Shaker believes that the Egyptian market is ready to accept fifth-generation technology, especially since it is an advanced technology that gives the telecommunications sector the opportunity to use untapped frequencies. This will give an advantage to the Egyptian economy and improve the services received by the Egyptian user, as well as open up investment opportunities for Egypt. According to Shaker, Orange Egypt is collaborating with the Egyptian government in consultations on communication technologies, and the company is also working on a number of technical projects in the capital with the cooperation of a number of Egyptian companies.[1]
