2022: Sales collapse 21%

In 2022, the personal computer market in Western Europe faced one of the most serious falls in its history. Sales fell by 21% compared to the previous year, as stated in the Canalys report, submitted on April 3, 2023.

Laptops, desktops and workstations are taken into consideration. It is estimated that approximately 51.6 million such devices were sold in Western Europe during 2022. For comparison: a year earlier, shipments reached 64.9 million units. The sharp decline is explained by several reasons - this is the saturation of the industry after rapid sales amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of electronic components, failures in supply channels, as well as macroeconomic difficulties that provoked a decrease in purchasing power.

A significant drop is due to the impact of the economic situation on demand, as well as the formation of stocks. However, it is important to remember how saturated the market has become during the [COVID-19] pandemic. Starting from the second quarter of 2020, in Western Europe, eight consecutive quarters of consumer PC shipments were higher than in the holiday quarter of 2019. Meanwhile, commercial demand declined as businesses faced pressure from rising interest rates, said Canalys Research analyst Kieren Jessop.

The largest supplier of PCs in Western Europe in 2022 was the Chinese Lenovo with 13.9 million shipped devices and a share of about 26.9%. In second place is HP - 12.2 million units and 23.7%. Dell has the third position with 7.3 million computers sold and 14.2%. The top five also included Apple and Acer with 6.3 million and 3.4 million sold PCs and shares of 12.2% and 6.6%, respectively. All other market players jointly control 16.3%.[1]
