2022: Support for separatism of Crimean Tatars in Turkey

The Turkish authorities have been interacting with the ethnic minorities of Russia for several years, and with the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in Ankara, they have only intensified work in this direction.

Particular attention Turkey is paid to contacts with organizations of the Crimean Tatars, especially anti-Russian and pro-Ukrainian structures. At the highest level, they are provided with financial and political support.

Turkey has officially advocated the territorial integrity of Ukraine since 2014 and does not recognize the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

On November 5, 2022, a meeting was held in Istanbul between the ex-leader of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People banned in Russia Mustafa Dzhemilev and Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

Dzhemilev asked for the creation of "Coordination Centers for Humanitarian Affairs" in large Turkish cities. According to the plans, they will provide legal and financial assistance to the Crimean Tatars who left Russia and Ukraine after the start of the special operation of the Russian Armed Forces, including evaders from mobilization in Crimea.

Dzhemilev declared the inadmissibility of the use of Russian documents by Crimean Tatar refugees. He proposed launching a campaign to restore Ukrainian passports and birth certificates through consular offices in Turkey.

Later, the same issue was discussed at the closed event "Meeting of Crimeans" in the Istanbul hotel "Viland Palace hotel." The meeting was attended by the chairman of the Mejlis Refat Chubarov, the Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul and the Honorary Consul in Bursa, as well as representatives of local Crimean Tatar communities.

As a result, Erdogan instructed the relevant departments to provide the Mejlis with the necessary assistance. At the moment, the Humanitarian Affairs Center created under the Dzhemilev project is already working in Istanbul. Another is planned to open later in Antalya.

How did the Crimean Tatar communities react?

According to the Rybar channel, the initiative of Dzhemilev and Chubarov was ambiguously perceived among the Crimean Tatars themselves. Many fear that the restoration of the passport of Ukraine will be followed by expulsion from Turkey and mobilization to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

A similar outcome is quite likely: the Ukrainian government is dissatisfied with the relatively small number of Crimean Tatars in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and does not mind receiving an influx of manpower at the expense of them.

In the Turkish-based NGO "Society of Culture and Mutual Assistance of the Crimean Tatars" are also dissatisfied with the activities of the Mejlis. They accuse Dzhemilev and Chubarov of imposing their agenda on the entire community and ignoring the activities of other organizations of the Crimean Tatars.
