- Lease of a dedicated server (Dedicated server)
- Placement of own Colocation server
- Selected data center / lease of data center (pressurized zone).
- Cloud services
Virtual hosting
Virtual hosting (engl. shared hosting) — a type of a hosting at which the set of websites is located on one Web server. It is the most economic type of a hosting suitable for small projects. Usually each website is located on the own section of the Web server, but all of them together use the same software.
Providing the limited part of the disk place, CPU time, RAM to the client for use. The large data-centers usually do not provide similar mass service because of need of ensuring technical and consulting support. When using a virtual hosting one physical server shares between a great number of clients (hundreds or thousands). Any selection of a resource is not guaranteed to each client, but maximum is strictly limited. Clients cannot configure the server more. The virtual hosting has two main advantages: small cost and ease of management of the websites. For these reasons the virtual hosting is generally used by individuals.
The virtual hosting as service is compared and described on quantitative restrictions:
- size of disk space
- quantity of monthly traffic
- quantity of the websites which can be placed within a hosting as one service
- number of databases and number of the space for databases
- quantity of mailboxes and FTP accounts
And on high-quality restrictions:
- the free CPU resources, RAM which affect high-speed performance of the server
Because on such server usually there are many different websites, loading is very disproportionate and some hosters limit server resources (in the main CPU) for the user's scripts.
One of important selection terms of a hosting is the used operating system as the software which will maintain functionality of these or those services depends on it. For the organization of service of a virtual hosting the servers working running Unix OS, for example, of FreeBSD, GNU/Linux and also running Windows OS are used. Thus, the service of a virtual hosting can be separated into two groups: UNIX/Linux-hosting and Windows hosting.
Virtual private server
VPS (engl. Virtual Private Server is the virtual private server) or VDS (engl. Virtual Dedicated Server is a virtual dedicated server) is service within which the so-called "Virtual dedicated server" is provided to the user. In the management plan the operating system mostly it corresponds to a physical dedicated server. In particular: root-access, own IP addresses, ports, rules of filtering and routing table.
In the virtual server it is possible to create own versions of system libraries or to change existing, the owner of VPS can delete, add, change any files, including files in root and other office directories and also install proprietary applications or configure/change any application software available to it.
In some systems of hardware virtualization settings of operating system kernel and drivers of devices are also editable.
- The virtual dedicated server emulates operation of the separate physical server. By one machine the set of virtual servers can be started. In addition to some obvious restrictions, each virtual server provides full and independent control and management as provides its normal dedicated server.
- Each virtual server has the processes, resources, a configuration and separate administration. Usually, as the virtual server freely distributed versions of the UNIX and GNU/Linux operating systems are used. For emulation it is usually used technologies of virtual machines.
- The administrator-owner of the virtual server can install any applications, work with files and carry out any other tasks possible by the separate machine. Lease of the virtual server — a popular type of a hosting as provides reasonable balance between the price and opportunities for most of owners the Internet of the websites and applications. The price can strongly differ depending on a service package of support and administration.
- Virtual servers without support (unmanaged) are provided on low (from several dollars a month) to the prices. Creation of the website on such server can demand from the owner enough extensive knowledge on administration of the operating system and the Internet of applications. The unsupported hosting well is suitable for specialists and enthusiasts.
- The virtual servers supported (managed) vary over a wide range and suit those who are interested to bend all efforts to development of the website, but not on technical details of its contents.
In the list of services of most the Russian and foreign hosting providers there is VPS. At cost it is intermediate between a virtual hosting and a dedicated server.
Lease of a dedicated server
Dedicated server (engl. dedicated server) — a type of a hosting at which the separate physical machine is entirely provided to the client (contrary to a virtual hosting). It is usually used for applications launch which cannot coexist on one server with other projects or have increased requirements to resources.
For business of advantage of lease of a dedicated server are as follows:
- Full access to hardware and to the software: The owner of a dedicated server is free to change a computer configuration, to install any operating system, to carry out any technical works on the server — it will not interfere with work of other services and servers. In addition to a dedicated server sometimes there is an access on KVM/IP — it allows to configure BIOS and software far off.
- Network security: The database server can be by the separate machine in order that the malefactor who acquired the superuser's rights on the Web server could not damage seriously the database as not all SQL, and only some set of stored procedures through which it is simply impossible to work great mischief will be resolved it.
- Unloading of the computer: Let's assume that the database server consumes so many computing resources that neither the Web server, nor the FTP server by this machine can be started already. Then the database is located on a dedicated server.
- Ensuring uninterrupted access: If the database and the Web server are by different machines, at accomplishment of technical works on the Web server users will have access to the database.
Collocation
Main article: Colocation
Collocation, colocation (from fr. colocation is cohabitation, engl. collocation is arrangement nearby, in turn from armor. collocatio(n-) — to place together) — the service consisting that the provider places the client's equipment in the territory (usually in the data-center) connects it to electricity, provides service and connection to communication channels with high capacity. Sometimes the specified equipment does not belong to the client, and is rented by it at the same provider, in this case the service is called "lease of a dedicated server".
Such placement allows to save on the organization of a communication channel from provider to the client — the last mile. Most often on a collocation put the servers intended for maintenance of websites and other network services with the large volume of traffic and also the equipment to which reliable access from many points, for example, VPN hubs, IP telephony gateways is required.
Usually in addition to actually placement of the equipment and connection to a communication channel also enters into structure of this service:
- organization of remote access to the equipment (KVM, remote access);
- redundant power supply;
- providing climatic mode;
- physical protection;
- the simplest services in hardware maintenance (to reboot, insert a disk, etc.);
- monitoring.
Other related services (for example, data backup, data protection) usually are the operator at additional expense. Some are inclined to classify a collocation as hosting subspecies, others believe it independent service.
Placing the equipment on industrial racks in large data centers, business receives the round-the-clock monitoring of working capacity, traffic and energy consumption. The largest colocation-centers can even guarantee "аптайм", close to 100% as they perform a backup of data on the equipment located out of DPCs. Usually such service is provided on a case of natural disasters or other force majeurs.
The average monthly rate of lease of a rack of type 1U in Moscow region DPCs is about $100. The IP address, Ethernet, channels from the largest telecom operators of the country, the round-the-clock access to the platform, connection to network via the high-quality equipment of popular vendors usually enter the price.
Lease of data center
Lease of data center is the service popular nowadays provided by owners of commercial DPCs. Lease of data center means or lease of specific racks or the selected zone in data center (i.e. the physical protected space for placement of own servers) either lease of space or spaces in racks for placement of the servers.
Also lease of the selected zone (the so-called pressurized zone) can be performed. Many data centers are ready to service clients with very large park of the equipment. Administration of the placed equipment is performed by the client independently. In this case the round-the-clock access to data center is provided to clients, at the same time the complete data security of each client is guaranteed.
Cloud services
Main article: Cloud services (market of Russia)
Main article: Russian IaaS market
Cloud computing (engl. cloud computing) — the information and technology concept meaning ensuring universal and convenient network access on demand to the general pool (engl. pool) of the configured computing resources (for example, to data networks, servers, data storage devices, applications and services — both together, and separately) which can be quickly provided and released with the minimum operating costs or appeals to provider.
Cloud infrastructures can be unrolled as on model of a private, and public, and hybrid cloud. The latest two models assume use of resources of specialized service provider as which providers of services of commercial data centers (kTsOD) usually act.
