2023: Deaths in China peak since 1960
In May 2024, data was published, according to which deaths in China in 2023 rose to 11.1 million people, reaching an all-time high since 1960. These figures are almost 700 thousand higher than the mortality rates recorded in 2022 (10.41 million deaths) and correspond to approximately 7.87 deaths per 1000 inhabitants.
Mortality rates in China have changed unevenly over the past 20 years by 2023, which is associated with a disproportionate number of different age groups, improved quality of health care and the spread of epidemics. Although the Chinese Bureau of Statistics does not disclose the causes of deaths, the increase in mortality is probably associated with the lifting of coronavirus restrictions in December 2022 and new outbreaks of infection. According to official data that the government China provided, World Health Organization COVID-19 121,893 people died from infection in the PRC. However, according to the New York Times, from December 2022 to February 2023, the pandemic claimed the lives of from 1 to 1.5 million people. According to other data published by the Center for Disease Control based on USA data from, Hong Kong the death toll in China during the pandemic could reach 1.41 million people.
In addition, the general trend towards increased mortality is due to the aging population of China. According to statistics, the proportion of people aged 60 and over is expected to rise significantly in the next two decades, and deaths will continue to rise. The aging of the population, along with a decrease in the birth rate, will change the structure of the Chinese economy, primarily in the field of consumption. The Chinese government intends to send additional funds to develop the care of the elderly, for example, services such as food delivery to nursing homes.[1]
