2020: Banning school lessons via Zoom
In early April 2020, Singapore banned school lessons through Zoom after a series of "very serious incidents" in the first week of coronavirus quarantine.
Schools in Singapore barely managed to switch to home schooling, but they will already have to look for new tools for conducting video lessons. During one incident, lewd images appeared on screen and during another, unfamiliar men began making lewd comments to teenage girls in a geography class, according to media reports.
The Zoom video conferencing tool turned out to be very popular during the quarantine, but the service faced serious security and privacy problems.
These are very serious incidents, "said Aaron Loh from the Singapore technology department of the Ministry of Education. - The Department for Education is currently investigating both offences and will file a police report if it sees fit. As a precaution, our teachers will suspend Zoom until security issues are fixed. |
Law noted that Singapore's ministry will continue to advise teachers on safety protocols, such as safe login Lo.
Zoom representatives apologized for the incidents and pledged to provide educators with the tools and resources they need on a safe and reliable platform. Zoom has already changed settings for educational organizations: they now include virtual waiting rooms and ensure that only chat-invited users can share their default screens.
Taiwan and Germany have already restricted the use of Zoom, while Google has banned the desktop version for corporate laptops. Zoom also faced a class action lawsuit over the lack of end-to-end encryption of meeting sessions and routing traffic through China.[1]
