Refunds of up to €6,000 for buying an electric car - government subsidies

On March 8, 2022, it became known that Italy begins to subsidize up to €6,000 ($6,570) from the purchase price of new electric vehicles and low-pollution cars as part of a plan to support the country's automotive industry.

The Italian authorities have allocated a total of €8.7 billion until 2030, including approximately €700 million for 2022, to support their automotive industry.

Italians will be able to return some of the money spent on the purchase of an electric car

The subsidy of up to €6,000 applies to the purchase of new cars worth up to €35,000 and includes a contribution of €2,000 related to the disposal of polluting cars with an internal combustion engine.

The purchase of hybrid electric vehicles worth up to €45,000 will be subsidized for up to €2,500, while the plan also provides for the payment of €1,250 for modern cars with an internal combustion engine (Euro6) when recycling old cars, the source said.

New car sales in Italy fell 23% in February 2022 to 110,869 units as demand for all-electric vehicles declined after government incentives ended, according to the country's infrastructure and transport ministry. It was the second sharp monthly drop in sales in the market. The number of registrations in January 2022 decreased by 20%.

Electric vehicle sales declined 8.2% in February, bringing the electric vehicle market share to 2.8%, down from 3.4 percent in January. However, this is still an increase from February 2021, when the share was only 2.4%.

Benefits aimed at boosting sales of electrified cars were discontinued in October 2021, but new subsidies were promised, due by the end of March 2022, for all-electric and other low-emission vehicles.[1]
