Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD)
EMD is the industry standard of exchange of electronic messages allowing airlines and to the agencies to transfer to a travel information connected with the statement, management, distribution and implementation of aviation services more effectively.
EMD is the key component of the IATA e-Services program excluding need of an execution of paper documents for the industry. According to the estimates of IATA, EMD will allow the aviation industry to save $2.9 billion annually.
Implementation of the EMD standard will help a travel to the agencies to cut down expenses, to automate the reporting and accounting under sales of additional services. At the same time the traveler receives the uniform, consolidated and clear format of the electronic document describing all range of the services purchased by it. The new standard is key for effective sales of the services (Ancillary Services) accompanying air flight, including the increased space between rows of seats, an onboard power supply and conveyance. The recent research of Ideaworks considers related services as more and more important item of income for airlines which showed global growth by 43% in 2009 to €11 billion.
All suppliers of GDS systems should guarantee a travel to the agencies an opportunity for work with the industry standard of EMD in all markets where there are systems of settlement of ARC (Airlines Reporting Corporation) and BSP (Billing & Settlement Plan), until the end of 2013.
