2024: Russian Engineering Systems Design Market Growth by 3.9% to ₽186,9 Billion

The Russian engineering systems design market increased by 3.9% and reached ₽186,9 billion in 2024 against ₽179,9 billion in 2023. Positive dynamics was recorded for the third year in a row, which indicates the emerging trend of recovery and adaptation of the industry after external and internal challenges. The study was published in July 2025.

According to Gidmarket, about half of the growth is due to inflationary factors, including an increase in the cost of labor, logistics and components of engineering systems. The remaining part is the result of a real increase in the volume of project work within the framework of national and regional infrastructure development programs.

The main contribution to the development of the market is made by the consumer industries of design services. Construction, metallurgy, oil and gas sector, transport and agro-industrial complex stimulate the demand for engineering design through the growth of investment activity. These sectors need both reconstruction of existing facilities and new construction.

Experts estimate the market growth potential at least twice as much, which means a possible volume of over ₽370 billion in the coming years. The implementation of such a scenario depends on the comprehensive support of the industry, the introduction of innovative digital solutions, standardization of design processes and the training of qualified specialists.

Market dynamics demonstrate a steady recovery from the 2021 crisis. In 2021, the volume decreased to ₽137,0 billion due to interruptions in the supply of equipment, the rise in the cost of construction materials and the consequences of the pandemic. Companies were forced to suspend or revise projects, which temporarily froze demand for designer services.

Phased recovery began in 2022-2023 thanks to measures to support and stabilize the construction sector. In 2022, the market grew by 10.4% to ₽151,2 billion, and in 2023 it added 18.9%, reaching ₽179,9 billion. In 2024, the industry not only reached the pre-crisis level of 2020 (₽153,6 billion), but also exceeded it.

Digitalization has become a key driver for the development of the industry. The transition to BIM technologies is changing from a competitive advantage to a mandatory standard. Building information modeling allows you to comprehensively manage the life cycle of an object from design to operation.

BIM technologies provide automatic detection of collisions between engineering systems, which reduces the number of alterations during the construction stage. 3D visualization of all communications allows the customer and the contractor to visually evaluate the project before the start of work. The synchronous work of architects, engineers and designers in a single digital environment increases the transparency of processes and minimizes misunderstandings.

In 2024, a significant part of large design bureaus and construction companies implemented BIM at all stages of work. Government contracts increasingly contain a mandatory requirement to use BIM, which pushes even small companies to digitalize.

Artificial intelligence is becoming an important tool in the arsenal of engineering designers. Machine learning algorithms automate routine processes, identify non-obvious relationships in engineering systems, and make informed decisions early in design.

AI is used to quickly select optimal solutions based on a large array of input data, automated tracing of engineering communications and a scenario analysis of system behavior in emergency conditions. The technology reduces the likelihood of design errors by analyzing solutions for compliance with best practices.[1]
