2023: Global ethyl alcohol sales growth of 3% to 127.2 billion litres

In 2023, sales of ethyl alcohol globally reached 127.2 billion liters. This is 3% more compared to 2022, when 123.5 billion liters of these products were sold. The growth is mainly due to the use of ethyl alcohol as fuel and additives thereto. This is stated in the review of BusinesStat, presented in mid-October 2024.

It is noted that the global ethyl alcohol market is divided into various sectors depending on the application, including fuel and additives to it, food and drinks, chemicals, cosmetics and personal hygiene products. Among these segments, the fuel industry is the largest consumer of ethanol.

The review takes into account sales of denatured and undenatured ethyl alcohol. According to estimates, in 2019 the total volume of sales amounted to 124.3 billion liters. A year later, a drop of 7.8% was recorded - to 114.6 billion liters. In 2021, sales rose by 6.3%, reaching 121.8 billion liters, and in 2022 an increase of 1.4% was noted.

At the end of 2023, the leading sales market for ethyl alcohol is USA with a share of 41%, or about 53 billion liters. In the North American market, mainly fuel ethanol is sold. Almost all automotive gasoline that is sold in the United States contains about 10% ethanol (E10). In second place in the list of countries - leaders in the consumption of ethyl alcohol is with Brazil a result of 23.5% (approximately 30 billion liters). This country's fleet is dominated by flexible fuel selection (FFV) models capable of running on pure ethanol, pure gasoline or any mixture of the two. Closes the top three China with a share of 9% and 11 billion liters sold in 2023: the PRC is actively developing the ethyl alcohol market for the chemical industry.[1]
