History

2024: Ban on the use of social networks by children under 14 years old

On March 25, 2024, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law prohibiting children under the age of 14 from using social media. This measure is designed to protect minors from possible negative influence on the Internet, bullying, etc.

The law prohibits people under the age of 14 from registering accounts on social platforms. At the same time, children aged 14 and 15 will be able to register on social networks only with the consent of their parents.

An official post on the Florida governor's website said that social platforms harbor a variety of dangers, while the new law "gives parents more opportunities to protect their children." House Speaker Paul Renner emphasizes that the Internet has become a "dark alley" for minors, where attackers prey on them, and social networks can provoke depression in children, self-harm and even suicide.

In addition to shielding children from social platforms, a pleasant document requires pornographic sites or sexually explicit resources to implement a mechanism for checking the age of visitors. This will help prevent minors from accessing sites containing inappropriate content for children.

As CNN notes, similar laws are being discussed or have already been passed in a number of other American states, including Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Ohio and Utah. However, in some cases this has caused certain legal problems. Thus, a federal court temporarily blocked the law in Ohio due to concerns about a possible violation of the right of adolescents to access information on the Internet, which is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the US Constitution.[1]
