2026: Hacking of drug prescription portal by hackers

On January 19, 2026, the Central Directorate for Combating cyber crime Poland reported the identification of an organized criminal group whose members were engaged in hacking doctors' accounts and issuing fake electronic prescriptions for drugs containing narcotic and psychotropic substances. Seven suspects have been charged.

The attackers, as the investigation showed, used previously compromised personal data of medical workers to generate certificates that open access to the portal gabinet.gov.pl. Through this platform, doctors document the health status of their patients and prescribe treatment. Using the portal, cybercriminals wrote prescriptions for drugs such as Xanax, OxyContin, Occidolor and Nasen.

Fake prescriptions were then sold through internet messengers, after which they were used to obtain drugs in pharmacies throughout the country. In this way, several hundred packages of drugs containing narcotic and psychotropic substances were purchased. Some of them were exported from Poland to other European countries.

According to prosecutors, participants in the cyber group also used stolen doctor credentials to open fictitious bank accounts for the purpose of fraudulently obtaining loans. In addition, attackers can be involved in other cybercrimes, including fraudulent schemes related to the compromise of corporate email.

During the investigation, data were extracted from IT systems and evidence was obtained indicating that the defendants were engaged in various illegal activities in the digital sphere. All suspects admitted their guilt: they face imprisonment for a term of 3 to 15 years.[1]
